Greetings, Programs! If I'm reading my calendar right then today marks the 50th anniversary of The Practical Joker. Probably best remembered for Kirk is a Jerk.
But it introduced the holodeck. Some people have quibbled that it is not a holodeck. (It's called the "recreation room".) At the very least it's a more primitive cousin to the 24th century death trap. But really, it's just a holodeck. It's immersive, it looks bigger than the actual space it occupies (although it's pretty freaking big), you can touch things that it creates (like really big holes in the ground), and most importantly, it can try to kill you.
Happy birthday, holodeck.
p.s. Last week was the 50th anniversary of the introduction of Tiberius as James T. Kirk's middle name. No idea what the R stood for but I'm pretty sure it wasn't Racquetball. (Robert, at a guess.)
