It’s surprising enough Serena lost the final, even more surprising her loss was aided by penalties from behavior a 19 year old rookie would be ashamed of.

Djokovic/Del Porto should be good final. I’m glad Nadal lost because I want Federer to keep the AT record.

What happened to Serena today? I caught some of the post game and the interview with Osaka but I didn't see the match. Sounded like Williams was making a scene, based on what I read.

Williams was out played by Naomi Osaka who was brilliant out there. Patrick, William's coach, discovered flaws in Osaka's game: she's not confident in approaching the net, so he was giving Serena hand signs which help her but is illegal. Patrick got caught and Serena was penalized or at least was given a warning about it. Things got worse when Osaka got her confidence back after a series of drop shots and volley attacks by Serena (Again, because Patrick gave her pointers which is illegal); so she decided to start arguing with the Official who was right in every step he took. She lost a point in a game and later a game and then all hell broke loose with her typical diva antics but it didn't phase Osaka, but it tainted her victory.

Williams is an embarrassment to herself and to the sport when she behaves like that. It's hardly the first time she's abused officials but too often her self-indulgent diva antics are brushed aside and excused. Blaming the entire matter on sexism is just pathetic, even by her established standards. The crowd wasn't any better, either.

Osaka's deserved win is going to be completely overshadowed by Williams' behaviour, which is probably the most unfortunate aspect of the whole thing.

It’s a shame what should have been the best moment of her sports life was tainted.

And no, I have never seen a man go on that kind of tirade and not get penalized. The closest I remember is Lleyton Hewitt accusing a black ref of giving James Blake preferential calls because of race.

If anything Serena got more leeway not because of gender but because she was the one and only Serena.

Anyone else think it’s weird after Sampras broke the grand slam record that stood decades, three people broke it in fifteen years?
