Just had an email from Amazon UK cancelling my pre-order of the 2nd Prometheus novel The Root of All Rage.

Don’t know if it will be available to pre-order nearer the publication date. Or maybe Titan are changing the date.

I wouldn't assume too much from this, as Amazon's supply chain can be incredibly crappy in some respects like on SF books!

I've lost count of the amount of stuff they've said they can't get that I've nought elsewhere far more easily.

Amazon are useful, but unless you're really stuck with them, there are other options that you should look at: Book Depository, Wordery, SpeedyHen.

The book isn’t due out until May so it may become available to order again.

And if they cannot get I’m sure other suppliers will have it. Book Depository and Wordery sell through Amazon Marketplace.

Yes, naturally, some series do it that way, or people wouldn't experience that and become gunshy about crossovers. The point is that not everyone does it that way, that a bad experience with that approach shouldn't sour a reader on every crossover.

Yeah I agree. I meant that as empirical evidence of the fact that it doesn't make sense.

And a mild excuse to vent about the dumb way Blizzard Entertainment handles their tie-in media in a context where it was relevant to do so.

(I love when tie-in media does feed into the main work, but WoW feels like getting hit with a monkey paw re: that.)

I like to get via Amazon as they tell you if you’ve already bought something from them.

I can never keep track of what I’ve got.

I noticed today that though my order for the first novel still shows - when you go to the item page itself, it shows as a cost of 4.99 (but on my orders as 5.49) with one seller, but when you click on the seller lists, it shows as no sellers actually holding the item. I'm not sure what's p!

Yeah, I get that too.

Weird.

But third party sellers never show on Amazon until the official release date.

May have the better base price but on Amazon there is usually a postage charge when on their own site postage is free.

eg. World of Books will have a price of 1p plus £2.80 postage on Amazon but on their own site it will be £2.75 with free postage.

Both BD and Wordery are free postage on their own sites. It's always worth looking around.

I generally pre-buy Trek paperbacks in the range of £5.65-5.85 ahead of time this way.

Would this mean that the Discovery license is separate from the main Star Trek license?

There is no "Star Trek license." Licensees negotiate for each series separately. Until a few years ago, Simon & Schuster and a few other long term licensees *did* have agreements that included "everything," but that hasn't been the norm for a while now.

If it’s the seperate licence to publish Kelvin Timeline material that’s preventing the entire Star Trek publishing line (minus Discovery) from proceeding to make S&S money, why not go ahead and contract to do “everything else” and then let the Kelvin Timeline issue get resolved in due course.

Anlmost seems like Pocket said “If we can’t do the Kelvin Timeline stuff we’re done.” And they've been forced by outside circumstances to ride their own bluff for alot longer than anyone expected.

We have problems with the Prime timeline.

Most of the 24th century novels are now up to 2386. The destruction of Romulus in the Prime timeline (and its ramifications for the Alpha Quadrant) occurs in 2387 but that happens in the Kelvin movies.

Pocket needs the Kelvin license to move the novels forward.

Dayton answered that over a week ago in this very thread:

At last report, the deal was being finalized. There was a change in leadership at S&S/Gallery Books a short while back, at a level above the in-house editor, and that likely interrupted whatever discussions were in process, for Trek as well as any number of other things. The new person in charge gets to weigh in, etc.

So it wasn't specifically about anything to do with Trek, it was about a higher-level change at Simon & Schuster that delayed things companywide.

One company’s not going to negotiate a separate agreement for each flavor of Trek. They’ll negotiate for the flavors they want to be included in the license they’re shooting for. They only want to do this once, after all. And then there’s the other stuff happening at higher levels that further slow the process.
