2017, A Trek For The Fans?

Didn't he demote himself in TMP? The one where Decker and Spock kept saving the day, whilst Kirk sat back and watched?

There was an old film called 'Border Incident' where he was pretty good too. But there wasn't as many 'milking the giant cow' moments as TWOK.

To be honest, most of the things I've seen Montalban in haven't exactly demanded a lot of range. I'm not saying he wasn't capable or more and there were exceptions, but God did he get stuck playing 'the charmer' a lot - even Khan in Space Seed was a variation on that. I can remember seeing an episode of 'Murder, She Wrote' which managed to be a surprise because it did have him playing somone who was simply a grasping and pathetic old man.

And let's not forget Armando the kindly circus owner in the PLANET OF THE APES sequels. He's also good in "Mystery Street," an old detective movie from 1950. It pops up on TMC from time to time.

But, yes, charming, charismatic villains were his specialty. See also the original WONDER WOMAN tv-pilot and both his appearances on on THE MAN FROM UNCLE--as two different charming villains.

"I can't swim!"

"Really, George?"

I never expected Cumberbatch to mimic Ricardo Montalban, any more than I expected Heath Ledger to imitate Jack Nicholson or Cesar Romero when playing the Joker.

Did you expect Karl Urban to mimic McCoy as much as he did? I think to a certain extent, the main cast did a fairly good job of that, which is perhaps why Cumberbatch's performance sticks out. They're still supposed to be the same characters.

And Khan had a facelift in this reality. Problem solved.

It should've been fairly obvious that we weren't at all talking about looks.

But the looks thing does factor in when it gets to be a "cheat"/

"OK, our bad guy is going to be Khan. But we don't want people to know that so we'll cast a guy who looks nothing like Khan and we'll call him something else, yeah, and then when he reveals that he's Khan, people'll be all like, whoa, he's Khan."

Give me a break.

If they wanted to do the Khan story, they should have cast someone like Naveen Andrews and done the story.

And remember, this Khan has no reason to hate Kirk because the whole Ceti Alpha thing never happened.

But, Khan doesn't hate Kirk in STID-he hates Marcus. Kirk is just an obstacle in his way towards his real goal. The only animus there is the personal slight that Kirk would dare strike him.

Casting someone who looks nothing like Ricardo Montalbahn is not the same thing as casting someone who looks nothing like Khan. None of the actors who were in negotiation to play Khan looked like Montalbahn. (Cumberbatch was a last ditch choice) Naveen Andrews does't either. Though I would have loved to see Andrews in the role.

Khan didn't hate Kirk in Space Seed either. Why does he need hatred of Kirk as his motivation? How many TWOK nods did the movie need? ;)
