2016 College Football

Well USC tried to give this game away, but Colorado didn't want it.

Tomorrow it's on to the Rams game.

Fight on!

K-state won against the Cowboys. Nice to see a player hug his coach.
A Gamecock player looked to have injured his--and LSU is held scoreless.

Go Washington Huskies!!!
And go Cougers!

BOTH Washington teams are doing great this season. Definitely be a memorable Apple Cup in a few weeks, will basically be the PAC-12 north championship. I don't know who to root for! #bowdown #gocougs

I tend to be a Husky, but a kid I used to babysit for goes to WSU.

How about those Trojans?!?!

Huskies were probably due a loss...and our offense just didn't show up at home and defense struggled. Good game for USC. Too bad it looks like Colorado will probably get Pac-12 south.

This week's game was sad for the Cougs, but I knew it'd be a difficult game. Their defense was hobbled a bit with Craycraft out and Falk just wasn't himself this week. Huskies struggled a bit at the start but seem to be pulling ahead now in their game.

ETA: Watching the Washington game the announcers make the Pac-12 more tricky than it seems. USC definitely has a chance. Replay at Pac-12 championship? ;)

Not this time. The Pac 12 Championship will be Washington vs. Colorado.

Both teams lost to USC. Just sayin'....;)

Much worse (IMHO) is the situation at the top. We'll have Ohio State almost certainly getting a playoff spot even though they did not win their conference. How can you be the best team in the country if you're not the best team in your conference?

I know people will argue that point, that the best team is the one who played the best overall, etc. My problem with that is: if the Conference Champion cannot claim to be the best team in the conference, why bother having that game? What's the point?

Imagine if the NFL worked like that. Let's say for the sake of argument the Bills won the AFC Championship. But voters thought that the Raiders had an overall better season, so they get to go to the Super Bowl instead.

The elephants getting into the BCS title game without a conference title led us to the playoff, OSU getting into the playoffs without one will lead us to an 8 team playoff.

And thank god for that. Ridiculous to think that Ohio State is almost certainly in without even winning their division, let alone conference, and no matter what happens so is Alabama.

A mandate of an 8 team playoff should be that all Power 5 Conference Champions are guaranteed a spot, plus 1 for the Group of 5, leaving 2 at-large. Thought personally I'd give 2 for the Group of 5 and leave a single at-large. It should already only be open to conference champions.

Let's play pure fantasy and imagine that Alabama, Clemson, and Washington (sorry Huskies) all go down.

Guaranteed in: PSU/Wisky, V-Tech, Florida (ugh), Colorado, and OK/OkSU, plus a Group of 5.

Leaves Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Michigan, and Washington to fight over the last two spots. Horrific and outrage-inducing? Tough shit, win your conference if it's supposed to mean so damn much.

In college football, the conference schedule is a very small sample group and even then they only missed out on a tiebreaker.

You could also say, if you're not going to factor in non-conference losses in considering a team's strength, why play them? Where do you draw the line, do you let a team in that's 8-5 if all those five losses happen to be non-conference?

If you want to give special value to winning a conference you can't have a system that cuts conferences up in a way that the high variance nature of a short season may keep the best team in the conference from playing in the conference championship.

Let's put it this way. Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan all played each other, and every game was won by the home team. Two were won by very small margins, the only blowout is the one Penn State lost. It'd be great to give special value to the conference champion, but it makes more sense to me to put a non-conference champion in the playoff than it does to deny that team a chance to play their way in just because the team they beat's second loss is conference and the team that beat them's second loss is non-conference.

Huskies are Pac-12 champs! WOO! Bow down to Washington! Relatively poor performance by Browning the QB, but the running game was dominant. 41-10!

I'm both a Washington State and UW alumna. The Apple Cup always tears me apart. So happy to see at least one of those teams have success. Next season should be interesting as well, considering most of the major players are still in place for both teams.

I'm starting a new job (finally) on Tuesday on the UW campus. Should be interesting to see if there's any excitement around campus about this. Then again it's also the week before Autumn quarter final exams, so maybe more stress than excitement for the students.

Still some question by commentators as to whether Michigan or Washington deserve the #4 spot. I would hope winning the Pac-12 championship in such a convincing manner would give the Huskies an edge. I'm pretty sure the Huskies will get trampled by the Crimson Tide, but we'll see.

Yes that was a nice game. Congratulations, you've won the opportunity to get crushed by Alabama.

:nyah:

Now, another stupid twist in college football: Since Washington won, they should go to the playoff. That leaves Colorado as the "runner-up", and they should go to the Rose Bowl. However, they don't do it like that. The highest ranked Pac 12 team will go. Before last night, Colorado was #8, and USC was #11. USC beat Colorado in the regular season. So...voters will decide who goes to the Rose Bowl. Does Colorado fall below USC? Then you have USC representing the PAC-12, when they did not win the division or conference.

If anything it's weird to me that people are questioning a system that allows non-conference champions to get in the playoffs but nobody is questioning a system that allows 3 of the best 7 teams in the league to be in the same division and the tiebreaker between two of them to be determined based on the result of games neither of them played in. (If Michigan doesn't lose that game against Iowa, Ohio State wins the three way tiebreak).

If anything Ohio State should be playing Penn State in the conference final or all four of them should be in a conference semifinal to prove definitively which is actually best.

But who are, as we both will agree, are the the best team in the Pac 12. :D

Grats to USC. Rose Bowl bound! What a comeback. Not just this season, but from some of the most draconian and unfair NCAA sanctions ever imposed. Clay Helton and his staff are to be commended. When the season started, I thought UCLA's Josh Rosen would be the best QB in L.A. Boy was I wrong about that. Sam Darnold right now is the best in the Pac 12 and possibly in the nation.

Yes this season has really turned around thanks to Darnold and Helton.

I'm glad we're going to the Rose Bowl. I'm going to start planning my trip.
