2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (LOL NO)

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Wow, you didn't even mention how it'll effect Russell's Super Two status.

I wonder why. Maybe because it doesn't fit your earlier narrative?

If you want to go on pretending for another three pages that the playing time of guys like Tommy La Stella in the 2015 season matters at all in the grand scheme of things, and that the Cubs are making prospect promotions as panicked reactions to the Oppression of Injuries and not due to their internal promotion timetables combined with earliest opportunity, be my guest.

But I thought you said they were artificially holding back people purely for financial reasons? And whatever injuries that came up (Olt, La Stella) that spurred the Bryant call-up were constructs that Cubs were using as excuses to gain the financial upper-hand 6-7 years from now? You basically called it borderline illegal.

With Bryant, yes, because he had been ready for the majors since last summer, and it was patently obvious that they wanted the extra year of control on him, otherwise he would have broken camp with the team and if the Cubs truly believed it was legal to stash guys in the minors for service time reasons, they wouldn't have invented bullshit reasons about him needing work in the outfield (and then not having him play in the outfield at all). I'm still of the opinion there's a good chance that a grievance has already been filed in that matter.

Russell is a different case. He's not the guy projecting to be a moon-monster hitter for the next fifteen years who will get paid accordingly. And in any event I would not be surprised if he only spends a few weeks in the majors and they do some more gamesmanship to avoid the Super Two timeline.

Edit: Beyond that, Theo's too far good at optics to call up two top prospects on the precise day that adding them to the 40 would grant the extra year of control. Staggering them like this makes a lot more sense.

Allegedly the White Sox did the same thing with Rodon as the Cubs did with Bryant, but nobody's talking about that one.

If they're thinking as you say the staggering of Russell did nothing but affect his Super Two status for the negative from their perspective. Not sure what you mean here. They had a helluva lot more defensible position to leave him down until June or July (whenever it is, too lazy to look) and they didn't.

There's no allegedly about it. They did.

I'm still taking the line that I don't actually know what these teams were thinking, but they are running a business.

But either way, the Cubs are getting a lot of shit for a move the Astros made last year and the WS made this year.

As for the Cubs, they sure are come-from-behind darlings so far this year. That was a mark of the last 2 playoff teams they had in 07 & 08.

And the Astros had a grievance filed against them (well, Greg Genske informed the team of his intent to do so) that they settled rather than letting it get in front of an arbitrator. The point is that this is all coming to a head.

Apparently, but it wasn't a national story the way it is for us.

When the current CBA expires in Dec.2016, they should obviously get rid of the loophole, and then not agree to anything else this blatant.

"Right" or not, legal or not, don't agree to something like that, then start a shitstorm when it get abused.

The New York Mets are tied with the Detroit Tigers for the best record in the majors.

I am sure everybody expected that.....

I agree. Buster Olney tweeted..

Among players I've talked to privately: virtually no support to notion Bryant service-time issue should be a collective-bargaining priority.

Olney doesn't talk to players and his only real source in the league is the Yankees' front office, so I'd take that with a grain of salt.

If my math is correct, if the Mets just play .500 ball the rest of the way they've got 85 wins, which would be a pretty nice turnaround for them.

As opposed to your sources?

So if the Cubs say it or the Yankees' mouthpiece says it, it's true. Got it.

He said what he was hearing. What reason would he have to lie other than to carpetbomb your narrative?

Olney is not exactly one of the more reputable writers in the industry (though, to be fair, sports journalism in general is a bad joke, and ESPN in particular is not what anyone would call a bastion of integrity). He's a far cry from, say, Peter Gammons.

Guess whose conviction was overturned on appeal?

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Terrible example. Gammons used to be a good example, back in the day, but has long since retired into a job as the Sox' mouthpiece. Exact opposite of your point, actually.

Pre-MLB.com Gammons was really what I was going for, because you're right, he's gone downhill in the last few years. Still not as blatant a shill for Larry Lucchino as Dan Shaughnessy, though.

Maddon started Bryant in center field today.

What the fuck.
