I'm guessing that this is Maddon realizing that Bumgarner vs. Haren is a lost cause and is just using this as a training day.

I think the 9-1 final score supports your theory.

Cubs acquire Fernando Rodney. :barf:

What, a 38 year old retread isn't better than Rosscup (sent to AAA) or Schlitter (DFA'd)?

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

I hear Capuano is available.

ETA: Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik relieved of his duties. Assistant GM, Jeff Kingston will be acting GM for the rest of 2015.

Well, the Cardinals have six games a piece with both the Cubs and Pirates next month, including a pair of series near the end of September, which will be the best opportunity for either team to do some damage to the Cardinals.

They own the Cubs, though.

The team with the best chance to jump over St. Louis is Pittsburgh, and they've played the Cards tough this year. Those 6 games between St. Louis and Pittsburgh are going to be must see TV next month.

With the Cubs home record improving so much in the second half, I'd like to see them get the first wildcard.

I'm not sure either team is catching the Cardinals.

Per Twitter:

A fan fell from the upper deck to an area behind home plate during tonight's Yankees-Braves game. EMTs spent 5-10 minutes working on him before taking him out on a back board. ESPN's Wallace Matthews tweets: "A witness said the fan was leaning over the rail screaming at A-Rod when he suddenly tumbled over the rail."

How long before someone tries to blame this on A-Rod?

Vin Scully says that 2016 will be his final season. Link

And the fan who fell from the upper deck at Turner Field (during tonight's game) has passed away. Link

^Prayers for that man's family and friends. It seems like there have been more fan-related injuries this season than in years past. I'm not sure what to make of this; Mike & Mike pointed out that the players asked for improved fan safety measures (more netting) during the last CBA negotiations but were shot down by the owners--which makes the owners look extremely bad in light of what's happened this year.

To be clear, I don't know that netting would have made a difference for last night's accident, but I think some of other fan injuries could have been avoided had the owners listened to the players.

Yeah, there have been fans falling from upper decks for years. Luckily not a lot of them. Higher railings could help this problem, but someone will still find a way to fall over them.

The big thing is to get more netting up around the diamond to protect against foul balls and flying bats from Addison Russell.

Ownership looks extremely bad in every labor negotiation. Given that Rob Manfred has been the point man in every CBA negotiation beginning with the 1994 strike, I'm not looking forward to the 2016 - 17 talks. Manfred effectively broke the union with the current CBA and I'm not at all convinced that Tony Clark is going to be a better leader than Michael Weiner (who was terrible).

I saw NYY 20 - ATL 6 and double checked to see if I was looking at the football scores.

Take away the 9 run seventh and it's still pretty impressive.

JAKE ARRIETA

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

The guy just keeps getting better, over the course of most games and over the course of the season.

The Cubs needed a great game from him tonight what with the disappearing offense.

A good game to win with San Francisco and Pittsburgh both losing.

ETA: All the 3rd outs of the game for Arrieta

Taking away the one walk, would it be a perfect game with the Castro error, or would there be an * ?

It would be scored as a no-hitter; according to the Official Rules a perfect game can only be awarded if no one on the opposing team reaches base for any reason.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

So if it weren't for the walk, we'd probably want to kill Castro....again.

Speaking of the devil, Castro cleared waivers the other day.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Lets be honest, that should have been ruled a hit. It was a hot smash right at him that bounced away. He made a few other really nice plays, the E-4 was a gift.

bah. Judgment call by the official scorer. If there'd been hits before or after nobody'd quibble with the call.
