2014 MLB Season: How Many Pitchers Will Die For Our Sins?

The weather wasn't supposed to "clear". Everyone was worried about getting the game in as there just isn’t any room to make it up.

The clouds part so 'The Captain' could play his final game in Yankee Stadium. The skies open so the fans could get one more look at their captain.

He missed a home run by about 2 feet in the first inning driving in a run.

He breaks his bat, the slow grounder to SS caused a errand throw... another RBI for Jeter.

3 run lead going into the top of the 9th, Robertson was not effective, gave up 2 dingers, and the O's tie the game.

Destiny once again plays a factor at Yankee Stadium. The baseball Gods would not let this game end.

Runner gets on, replaced by a speedster, Gardner sac bunts him to 2nd.
The table is set. 48,000+ at Yankees Stadium and countless others sitting in front of their TV have their fingers crossed hoping their Captain would once again “make it happen”.

Buck Showalter, Derek’s manager as he donned pinstripes and made the decision to give him #2, lets him hit.

'The Captain' once again is asked to be clutch.

In “Jeterest” fashion, he hacks at the first pitch with his patented classic inside out swing and hits the ball into the gap to right field driving in Antoan Richardson - winning the game.

Yes, I shed a tear or two last night as I vaulted off the couch watching my generations’ Joe DiMaggio walk off in style, Yankee Stadium erupted like I can't remember.

Scripted trips around the field with Jeter followed by is “brothers’ escorting him off be damned.

As Girardi said, “this worked better”.

Wow… I can’t believe…. wait – this is MY Captain, damn right I can believe it.

That pitch couldn't have been grooved any better if they let him hit off a tee.

Anyhow, congrats to a standup guy who played the game to the best of his ability and was a refreshing opposite of today's sorry athletes. :techman:

Walk off win on Jeter's last AB at Yankee Stadium. That is something to smile about!
Almost like it was scripted

Just kidding...kind of ;)

Oh, I think the Orioles had every intention of letting Jeter have his moment (Evan Meek's fastball in September averaged 91-92, that last one was an 85 mph, middle-in, batting practice pitch that Jeter should have clobbered to the opposite field with his eyes closed; the infield was shaded for a pull, Jeter went to the opposite field, then Markakis, who has a 75 arm on his worst day, made the slowest throw to home in human history) ... it's just that unlike Wainwright after the All-Star Game, Buck Showalter isn't dumb enough to come out and admit it. ;)

But, hey, as much as the incredibly fake and artificial retirement tour annoyed me all season (that Gatorade commercial was especially nauseating), that was a cool moment. (I'm still praying that Jeter pisses hot and gets popped for steroids on the last day of the season, but it was a cool moment.)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hated the Jeter retirement tour. Don't hate the man, think he's a class act, but for every team to bow down to him like the second coming was ridiculous.

Ok, I'm officially mad. They are doing the Derek Jeter chant in Boston. Not Jeter Sucks but the official Derek Jeter chant. I was hoping for some sort of normalcy from Boston fans but no. Can I get a Jeter Sucks chant please.

I do think they need a scouting overhaul, but I also agree that's not the main person to worry about.

Cardinals fans are already bitching about "revenge for 1985". That's getting old. Not just because the Cards still blew game 7. In the end, Game 6's bad call was Don Denkinger's fault, not the Royals...

Somehow, Amaro's managed to keep his job in spite of the enormous mess he's made of that organization. Pat Gillick made the Phillies a contender; Amaro's run them into the ground.

Although Gillick's still technically involved in the team. I've also heard wise people that think it's owner meddling not Amaro that is to blame (I personally think there's plenty of blame for everyone). They don't currently have a lot to work with, so I think they're realistically going to have to be terrible for a little while. I could see them saying "well, if we're going to be terrible, we might as well be terrible with Amaro."

Angels clinch HFA for the playoffs.

:techman:

I've read they're considering a 3 man rotation. I'm not sure what they should do, but the 4 and 5 spots are pretty dicey.

You could do worse than Santiago as a #4 guy, but LeBlanc has been totally fucked by his usage this year. Between the division shifts and basically being used as a spot starter, he's the last guy you want at the back of a rotation. The Angels basically have to go with a three-man rotation for the ALDS and use Santiago in long relief if needed. LeBlanc shouldn't be on the postseason roster.

Santiago runs hot and cold (see the Gatorade Game). LeBlanc has had a couple of solid outings his last two starts...

With two games to waste, I'll be interested to see how Scioscia plays it.

The problem I have with that approach is that another GM with a different perspective might be more willing to move veterans for prospects (Hamels, Utley, etc.). There's nothing they can do about Howard, unless he's willing to negotiate some sort of buyout and go play in the American League (which is exactly what he should do).

I don't blame the players for what's happened. They've all gotten old at the same time, and Father Time is the only undefeated entity in sports (though the Spurs are giving him fits). I don't know why Phillies management didn't forsee any of this four or five years ago. Now, I realize it would have been awkward to dismantle the team in 2010--when they were still a contender--but nothing justifies giving an aging power hitter like Howard such a huge contact, nor does it make sense to keep trotting uninterested players like Dominic Brown out there everyday.

The Royals are in the play-offs?!

The Royals... are in... the play-offs?!

And now the Blue Jays have the longest playoff drought, having not been since winning their second World Series in '93.

This team is a disaster and for all the talk in this thread about GM's being useless, I think the saying is Rube being Rube, Alex Anthopoulos seems to have a firm grip on this job, holding onto the game's worst manager in John Gibbons, a club house ruled by an egotistical star player in Jose Bautista and a massive cable empire ownership that is more interested in players shilling about cable services or for Westjet (see: Brett Lawrie) than performing on the field.

Some how the Mariners still have a slim chance of making it to the post season thanks to Oakland losing. Now they just need to beat the Angels with a tied game in the 9th....talk about pressure!

ETA: Dang it! Bases loaded and the Mariners can't manage to get one man in to win the game...on to the 10th inning.
