2014-2015 NHL Season

Surprised there was no thread on this. The season has started and there are 15 games on the schedule tonight. It's the 6th time the NHL has scheduled all teams play in a day in it's history. I'm excited Hockey is here. Hope it's a great season, even though for the Sharks it really doesn't start until like April. God I hated that they choked that series away last year.

I started the thread last year and it died a really quick death.

The new Rogers Canada TV contract has been hard to stomach so far. It's rough when Glenn Healy looks like the smart guy, sitting next to Sportsnet holdovers Nick Kypreos and Doug MacLean.

I thought there used to be a good NHL following here. Maybe that was a few years ago because it seems like the NBA has been gaining traction. That's not a bad thing, but figured it would still be nice to have an NHL discussion.

As for the Sportsnet contract, I'm in the US so I don't know what it's really like but I am a big fan of Jeff Marek, who works for Sportsnet, so I'm happy that he's a big part of this new deal. Other than that, I still don't like NHL Network games being blacked out on Gamecenter Live but oh well.

As for the product on the Ice, the Sharks have been just OK. It's too early in the season yet but they didn't look all that great against a well improved Islanders team. Hopefully they play better against New Jersey and then the Rangers on Sunday afternoon.

And then Pittsburgh does a classy act like this,

Thank you Penguins and their fans for your support.

Man thAt Sharks game was a bore fest. I'm glad they have a break till Thursday. They need it.

I think I'm on the Florida Panthers bandwagon. They are such a fun team to watch, and today has been a great game.

Anyone watching the layoffs? I watched Montreal Ottawa game last night. Subban is such a baby.

Ouch. I remember having to stay up really late when I lived in Bucharest to watch playoff games.

Yeah it's not fun. The 4am games aren't so bad though. You go to bed early, get about six hours of sleep. It's the 2am games that are a real bitch.

I still remember the Canucks' 2011 cup run... 25 games in two months. I was like a zombie towards the end because of lack of sleep. :D

Subban would never be on a team of mine. He's an average defender and a clown on the ice.

Watched the Jets-Ducks game last night. Was going good until it all fell apart in the 3rd period.

Also, Sportsnet's coverage is absolute garbage. Ended up watching it on mute and synced it up to the TSN radio play-by-play.

Sportsnet has gotten it wrong since Day One.

Did you need a huge, two level studio or could you have gone with someone a less extravagant?

Did you need to bring in Strombo, who has been a complete failure, to be a big name to host when you theoretically could have brought in someone to tutor under Ron MacLean for a few years before gracefully passing the baton?

Did you need to bring your B-list hosts (Millard, Kypreos, McLean) and try to pretend they are actually good enough?

Did you have to shuffle veterans like Scott Oake and Kelly Hrudey, who I actually like, to bit parts?

Would it hurt to bring in some new blood instead of old, tired retreads in the booth?

Makes me wish TSN won the contract, even if I had to put up with James Duthie.

Agreed. The Jets games that aren't on the national broadcasts during the season are on TSN3 and those guys are great! (Except Gary Lawless, but he only shows up during intermission, so he's easy to ignore.)

Last night's game wasn't as bad - at least until the 3rd period when things went off the rails again.

Some quality commentary from the Sportsnet guys following last nights Ducks-Jets game though:

"if you don't cheat you're not trying hard enough"

:wtf:

This followed a 3rd period with a couple blatant penalties that were not called on the Ducks. A too many men when they had the puck right in front of their own bench, and a hold/trip that directly resulted in the game-winning goal.
