That wasn't Mattel, that was Hasbro (through their now defunct Galoob/Micro Machine line). But they put out Vipers in the retro Battlestar Galactica offerings of similar card sizes.
I think it's more of a case that Mattel couldn't really get their bigger scale Trek ships back in U.S. retail stores and are now pushing a couple of them through their regular Hot Wheels line at a smaller scale. The problem with that--as some longtime Hot Wheels collectors can probably attest to--is that finding some particular vehicles there can be purely a matter of being in the right store at the right time. It's like they are trying to be difficult.

Those were limited edition, that would explain their scarcity at retail stores with some not even carrying them at all. That wasn't Mattel, that was Hasbro (through their now defunct Galoob/Micro Machine line). But they put out Vipers in the retro Battlestar Galactica offerings of similar card sizes.
There was a Hot Wheels release of the 70s Viper and Raider last year.
I'm not going to hold my breath. Lack of interest in the line led them to not even re-release the "1:50" nuEnterprise last year when it would have made the most sense with STID being in theaters.
Hmmm... I'm desperately hoping that Mattel has a few more Trek 'tricks' up their sleeves... [by that I mean actual Trek ship diecasts - rather than cars with 'trek' logos on them...]
I have a feeling they haven't played all their cards... yet...
