2012 Summer Olympics in London: Your Favorite Events

Hopefully, it's not too early to start a thread on the Olympic games. Anyway, I've watched the Summer Olympics coverage since I was a teen, starting with the Seoul, South Korea games in 1988. It's good to see athletes from different countries and territories converge into one city every four years in the spirit of unity and athletic competition. And corporate sponsorship. And political activism.

My favorite events have always been:

  • The Opening Ceremonies - I've always enjoyed the opening fanfare, the pyrotechnics, and the artistry and pageantry of the performers. Who could forget Athens 2004 with the floats displaying the different eras of Greek's rich history or the well choreographed dancers in Beijing 2008?
  • Swimming - Two words: Michael Phelps. :D I'm a fan and I've always had a crush on this aquatic human-machine.
  • Men's and Women's Gymnastics - Such graceful bodies and acrobatic moves! I stay up late at night just watch these events.
What say you? Do you have any likes or dislikes about the Summer Olympics?
EDIT:

Not sure if this thread should really be here ... Feel free to move to the Sports & Fitness Forum. Thanks.

This will probably get moved, but I like gymnastics and swimming too. Also, various track & field events, especially running. I just DVR NBC's whole coverage and then zap till I see what I like.

Cycling, especially road and BMX, and track and field interest me most - although most of the specialist disciplines like triple jump and hammer throw seem very silly to me (do you really need shot put and discus throw and javelin throw and hammer throw?) Is there anyone who's ever thrown a fucking hammer except to get to the Olympics?

It's even more annoying seeing how they cut down on the track cycling disciplines.

I'll watch most of what's on if I can at work though.

Men's Basketball

Men's Gymnastics - high bar, floor ex, P bars, rings.

Women's Gymnastics - beam, uneven bars

Men's Track and Field - 100, 200, 400, 4x100 relay, 1500 meter relay, long jump, high jump, pole vault

Men's Boxing - any division

Rythmic Gymnastics - (kidding :))

I can think of little that is more tedious than the Olympics, especially the athletics, track and field.

I'll be in hiding for the duration, waiting for the whole farcical thing to finish bankrupting the country.

Oh, except for the Sunday I'm going to two of the footy matches !

On the plus side with so much atention around London, you might be able to get a cheaper holiday elsewhere in the UK.

I'll know doubt watch some of the events.

And I believe there is an Olympic thread in the Sports forum.

Considering the multiple scandals in the selections for the GB teams in various sports (specifically fencing, taekwondo, football and triathlon), none of them this time.

Swimming, diving, and gymnastics. I couldn't possibly care any lesser about track and field. Too much doping. Those swimmers and gymnasts are superb athletes.

Oh I always watch the opening ceremonies, they're always cool. Swimming is usually the one I tune into after that. Will do so especially this year since a friend of my sisters got accepted to the Swedish Olympic swimming team this year. Keep an eye out for a girl called Stina Gardell in the longer distances.

All I will say is thank god new York lost 2012 to London. It must be a traffic nightmare  I may tune in to watch basketball but other than that, little else interests me
