2012 mass corona ejection-possible shields for Earth?

KJbushway

Commodore
OK we have all heard that scientist say that in 2012 there will be Mass Corona Ejection. Now if that hits the Earth it will overload our generators and any un-protected eletrical software will be useless. Now we have heard all the bad ways that can go wrong. Not that I believe in the whole 2012 thing, but what are some Ideas to protect Earth either from space or Earth that will help us? I have my own Ideas but I would like to hear yours first? :techman:

We have as much of a chance of shielding from a CME
as an ant has against stopping your foot. (Trek and Wars
have too many people overconfident of our tech abilities...)

Luckily we have an atmosphere that stops most of it and it
would have to be pointed directly at us, which is very unlikely.

Well actually If you look at my posts (not saying you have to) I tend to agree with your Trek and Wars arguement.

From what I heard with a mass ejection it doesn't really have to be pointed at us, while our position from the sun is ideal for creating and keeping life, it also hurts us.
Atmosphere would not stop the radiation or the huge amount of static that would blow transfusers. Worst possible affects would be the totally reversal of our magnetic field, yes Our atmosphere would protect us from the majority of the exposure but it wouldn't be enough.

Since when have we been able to predict CMEs?

This is just more 2012 bullshit, there was an original badly written article in New Scientist about how damaging a large CME could be, and the article started "It's September 22nd 2012..." but they were just trying to sell magazines by appealing to his whole conspiracy, it was never intended as a date with predictive power.

Unfortunately the 2012 conspiracy community have misinterpreted this and re-posted it all over the Internet claiming it's fact, when the truth of the matter is we have very little idea when CMEs will occur or how big they're going to be.

Pretty much the only realistic technological way we would have to minimize the effect of a CME is to turn everything off for the duration.

I said it was Bull. I don't believe this crap.
Its just a what if and possible out of this world ideas.
So I am not saying its real, I even stated that. Just give any ideas. Yeah I have heard about turning off everything.

Predicting CME's are near impossible that is true. Most times its an educated guess. Scientist can tell from over-active sun that their might be one. there is signs its just all about catching them and doing the walls of math to pedict what might happen.

What's so dangerous about the reversal of Earth's magnetic field? other than compasses pointing south?

It doesn't happen overnight. For some time the earth will have a very weak field where we'll be open to the full force of solar radiation. It would also adversely affect some avian and aquatic wildlife that uses the magnetic field for navigation.

I think there's also some significance with Fleming's left hand rule. I may have got this wrong, so correct me if I have...

Field reversal means that charged particles from the sun will get deflected the opposite way. The separation of charges and movement of those charges creates their own magnetic field, which amplifies Earth's magnetic field at high altitudes. But that effect may be less significant if charged particles are deflected the opposite way.

Atmosphere would not stop the radiation
Yes it will, at least the vast majority of it. And most of the heavier charged particles will get caught up by the planet's magnetic field.

or the huge amount of static that would blow transfusers.
Dude... wait, what?

Worst possible affects would be the totally reversal of our magnetic field
Had me and then lost me... where in the world do you get this stuff?

Just to be nitpicky, the correct scientific term is “coronal mass ejection.” A “mass Corona ejection” sounds like free beer for everybody.

Static, where did I get that from, I know I didn't pull it out of my butt? :vulcan:
Theres probably more to the name than static. but I thinks its worse than the kind you get on your clothes when they come out of the dryer or if you rub you feet on the floor and touch a door knob.

The history channel said it would be bad if poles reversed.

Well atleast the name was close enough to where you get the point of the topic.

So in 2012:

Lizards taking over
Polar Reversal
Nemesis losing its shit and destroying us.
Galactic alignment with the Earth, the solar system and the galaxy.
Betelgeuse goes nova, or rather we experience the effects of it having gone nova generations ago.
A coronal ejection.
The Republicans will take us over in the elections.

Man, 2012 is going to suck!

KJ, If you want an information source to avoid, History channel would be it. Wikipedia is like going to Harvard compared to History channel.

You forgot about Star Trek 2009! Part Deux :guffaw:

The history channel isn't all bad. It does teach other things with good information, just certain stuff they aren't to clear on. I wouldn't agree with the assumption that Wiki is better than History channel. It could just be me, the giver of the info that is messing up the message.
