2012 (Film) and Religion

I didn't know that about Emmerich. I just figured he picked sites like the Vatican and the statue of Christ because they're so easily recognizable.

It's like Hollywood's fondness for using cities like New York, San Francisco and Paris for catastrophes. They have iconic structures that can be wiped out.

He should have just told them that his science advisers told him that the Vatican really would snap off and roll over a crowd of people if it was hit with a massive earthquake. It's a cautionary tale.

I don't understand the problem, I was so happy when they blow up the Coliseum in The Core (by a thunderstorm no less - everybody knows stone is very conductive to electricity). So I would have guessed Arabs would be psyched to see the Ka'ba enjoying a fun ride.

I've seen it yesterday. It's an usual Emerich disaster movie - some implausible pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo happens, everything blows up, billions die, some make a noble sacrifice, people joke amidst the chaos and then there's a happy ending for all the good and moral people. You can guess who will die and who will live after seeing the character for half a minute. You can also exchange the dialog in the entire first half of the movie with the appropriately placed "OH NOES" and "IT'S A CONSPIRACY!".

Change the current mumbo-jumbo with aliens and you will get Independence Day. Change it with a global freeze-up and you will get A Day After Tomorrow. Same characters, same situations.

It will make an excellent Rifftrax. I enjoyed the movie because I knew what I would be seeing and Rifftrax will only enhance the experience.

ok this is the first 2012 thread I found, been thinking of going to the cinema, but cant find anything good on apart from 2012, however I have a concern

I think I saw this movie before, only it was called The Day After Tomorrow, is this a correct assessment?

Other than the vauge similarities in "the world gets destroyed", no. The plots are very different.
