2011 NFL Season - A New Game

I'm a bit excited about Cernel being the Chiefs' new head-coach. I think he showed a high degree of promise over the Chiefs' last three games. He even seems to have quite a bit of support from the players.

IF Matt Casshole is the Chiefs QB next year, and early indications are that he will be, it won't matter what Crennel does, KC won't be in contention yet again.

I get more of a Dumb and Dumber vibe.

It cannot be denied:

So Fisher is the man in St. Louis.

After two "nice guy" coaches, I really hope he goes in and knocks some heads together.

I don't like the Fisher hiring. I don't think coaches should have porno staches...

Pornstaches are for punters.

Fisher reportedly chose St. Louis over the Dolphins because the Rams were willing to give him ultimate authority, even over the general manager, in football and player personnel matters, which strikes me as a terrible idea, considering his absolutely shitty drafts after he won his power struggle with Floyd Reese. And, really, very few coaches have done well after getting full authority in the organization -- Mike Sherman and Mike Holmgren flamed out in rather spectacular fashion, Andy Reid has been wallowing in mediocrity, Mike Shanahan hasn't been all that hot, so on and so forth.

If Fisher wants that much authority, I wonder if he has a specific QB he wants to run his team (whose last name isn't Bradford or Moore) and he needs to be able to go above the GM's head to get it taken care of, which strikes me as mad, because I'd think just about any coach in the NFL would want to work with Bradford.

Miami definitely comes out ahead here, though, since they aren't paying a zillion dollars for Jeff fucking Fisher and letting him run the entire show. Yeah, six winning seasons in sixteen years is such an impressive run.

I'm not a fan of head coaches having ultimate authority over personnel decisions. I think it works better when you've got a head coach and a GM working together.

Like I said, it's been proven pretty consistently that it just doesn't work. (Even Belichick has been ceding more control over personnel to some assistants to focus on coaching.) There simply aren't enough hours in the day to be a coach and to be the general manager and do both jobs effectively. It's like a large corporation having the CEO also be its CFO.

Three coaches in the league currently have full control in the organization: Belichick, Reid and now Fisher. Belichick hasn't gone mad yet, but his drafting has been pretty shitty since Pioli left. Reid ... well, he's Andy Reid. They've been killing it in the draft, but overall, the team has some pretty real issues. And Fisher? All you need to do is look at the Titans' post-2006 drafts (when Fisher convinced Bud Adams to shove Floyd Reese out the door) to see how he is as a talent evaluator.

Kerry Collins is probably waiting for his phone to ring, though.

I'll just chime in and mention how big of a disaster Mike Sherman was when handed the title of GM. Sherman was only remotely competent at coaching, he couldn't evaluate talent to save his life. He also had major issues with trying to signing his players to new contracts, how awkward is that anyway? Having to negotiate your contract with the coach?

But yeah, there are 16+ hour work days (especially in training camp and preseason) for both positions simultaneously, as Timby says the math just doesn't work out. And what tends to happen when the coach has too much say in personnel decisions? Often you get short-sighted "win now" type moves like Hue Jackson's trade for Carson Palmer. You know, the type of move that might win you one or two more games this season while sabotaging your future.

It seems to work in soccer, but then rosters in American football are more than twice as large.

Yeah, I mentioned Sherman earlier. To be fair, Ron Wolf had gotten a bit goofy in his later years of drafting -- Jamal Reynolds, anyone? -- and I believe Sherman was responsible for getting Cullen Jenkins and Nick Barnett, but overall, he was a disaster of a GM, just truly awful. I'm going to laugh so hard if Tampa Bay hires him and ultimately gives him authority over Mark Dominik.

In less than an hour, the 49ers will play their first postseason game in 10 years. I can't wait. I have a feeling the Saints are going to win (I hope not) but it should be a close game.

Go Niners!!!!

I'm rooting for more of this tonight....

Highlight of the last game. It's kinda hypnotic and fun to watch over and over.... and over...... and over.... and.....

Damn NFL, why do you have to start games at 2am? ;)

Guess I'll have to do my best avoiding spoilers and watch the Broncos-Patriots game sometime tomorrow.

eta: incredible turnover in favour of the 49ers just now - what a hit, wow, and getting the ball on top of that. I'm very impressed.
