2011 MLB Season Discussion

Needs more work than a quick swap of one team, but like the idea in general. One of the SI guys (Verducci, maybe?) had something up over the off-season that seemed like it would work. Had to flip a few teams around, but more open generally. Forget how it was drawn out, but still had 3 divisions per league, jsut totally shuffled around as to who plays who. Also seperated the Yanks/Sox, made some different setups. Then went with the idea about another wild card team, and a 1-game play-in game to get the 4th spot. Also went with a much more balanced schedule this way, which is a big complaint of mine. Works out pretty good if your "natural" rival sucks, but otherwise really screws up an otherwise tight divisional race. Think the Yankees do a little better playing the Mets a bunch of time while the Sox play the Phillies? Sox didn't always play the Phillies as much, though. They used to play the Braves, back when they were better, so pretty much had it stuck to them for 'natural' rivals :)

Wasn't the whole point of the Brewers moving to the NL to have an even number of teams per league so you wouldn't always have a team off or playing interleague.

Apparently that's outdated to Bud Selig now. Personally, I would just like to see the divisions done away with. I'm tired of watching the Braves play the Marlins 18-19 times a year.

Great idea! This way, the AL playoff teams will be the Red Sox, the Yankees, the Rays, and two other teams. :p

I don't mind divisions, but I hate the unbalanced schedule. Nothing like making your last trip of the year to San Diego or whatever on Easter weekend.

I don't want more playoff teams. The regular season is long and tedious enough as is at time, you don't need to devalue it more by adding more WCs.

Look at the NBA, they just had a great playoffs and I was really into them over the last 2 months...after not really caring about the regular season at all.

I personally like unbalanced schedules, but, at a minimum, divisions. Rivalries are fun. Preventing one region from having all the playoff teams is fun. The two team wild card playoff is ok in my mind, but the playoffs are long enough as it is.

And moving a team just seems haphazard.

I've got a question regarding realignment that I haven't heard anyone bring up. A lot of people complain about the Yankees and Red Sox winning all the time, so my question is how does realignment make it so they aren't the teams winning all the time. I hate the unbalanced schedule and would like to see that changed, but what I do like is in the last decade, we've had a great mix of teams winning the world series, from the White Sox to the Giants to the Marlins and a bunch of other teams. I see with this alignment if it's the top 5 teams in each league, it kind of says to the small market teams that they're not going to compete because they aren't now. How is this alignment that's being discussed good for them, or are we going to be ignoring them from here on out.

I'm a Giants fan and was thrilled when they won the world series last year, but I wouldn't mind seeing teams like the Royals and Pirates have a shot, or at least a winning record.

^ Yeah, it seems like it wouldn't do anything to fix issues of the same teams making the playoffs year after year, which would seem to me to be the whole point of a divisional realignment or change in the playoff structure. But I'm a Jays fan, so I'm obviously biased.

As I type this, the Jays' bullpen is in the process of blowing yet another game in the 9th. Against the Orioles of all fucking teams. I just can't believe it. GM Alex Anthopoulos is always talking about how Rogers has given him a bunch of money to build the line-up. Okay, fine. There seriously isn't one half decent late-game reliever we can go out and get?

Because all I know now is I get nauseous when Frank Francisco and Jon Rauch step out of the gate. I'll take freaking Kevn Gregg back at this point. And that guy is one of the worst closers I've ever seen.

EDIT: ...And Gregg's ears must have been burning because he came on for the Orioles and saved the game in the bottom of the 9th. Dammit

Baltimore Orioles 4
Washington Nationals 8

And the lil winning streak continues. :D

I was in Boston last night to see the Red Sox trounce the Brewers, 10-4. Adrian Gonzalez was just a triple shy of the cycle. :techman:

Looking forward to my trip to Fenway at the end of August. Just hope the Yanks don't get swept again, otherwise things could turn awkward.

nah seriously, I am very excited about going there. Yankee fan though I am, I like Fenway very much and I want to see the latest renovations. And you can't get a more exciting rivalry than Yankees/Redsox...I should not be afraid, I trust Fenway security to keep an eye on things, plus decent Sox fans wouldn't give me more that the occasional catcall or Yankees Suck chant. I figure as long as I keep my mouth shut, my head down, and my hands to myself, I should be OK.
