2011 MLB Season Discussion

They may be branching out in the games they are covering, but they still talk about the Yankees and Red Sox during every broadcast.

Maybe when MLB realigns, they should keep the Red Sox and Yankees in the AL and move every other team to the NL. :p

NICE 3-1 win for Mad Bum tonight, after that aberration on Tuesday.

Some't else, which gets a D+ on the smell test, this weekend:

With Zito to come off the DL soon, What do the Giants do to resolve their 6 starters problem? Send J. Sanchez to the DL with tendinitis to make room for Zito!

While I like the ends, Zito put back in to see how well the re-hab took for the healing and bettering his pitching, keep Vogey in the rotation, and do something about the erratic Sanchez, the means seem a little fishy.

The Cubs packed in in a while ago, they just didn't know it yet.

I'm long past getting my hopes up each year. I just "wait & see" and then wait some more.

At this point, eating a lot of money doesn't do them any good. At least with Bradley, they got rid of a cancer in the process.

The problem is that all indications are that Jim Hendry's going to keep his job for one more season (unless the team absolutely tanks and finishes with 95 - 100 losses), and he -- with the blessing of owner Tom Ricketts -- has already said that the team will be spending money this offseason. It's essentially guaranteed that the team will not pick up Ramirez's option for next season, and Ryan Dempster has a $14 million player option that I'm sure the team will strongly encourage him not to exercise.

Long story short, the Cubs will be making a strong run at Albert Pujols, as stupid as it will be to do so with his age and health problems. And then the Cubs will be stuck with yet another Soriano-esque albatross of a contract for a decade. :barf:

If they're going to throw a ton of money at a first baseman, I'd rather it be Fielder. Younger & better health, though you don't get the "screw you Cardinals fans" effect if you do pull it off.

Pujols has been pretty down on playing at Wrigley in the past though.

The problem is, they've been sucking far longer than Hendry's been around, it's just that in this age, everything is under a microscope so much more than in the past.

And the sick amounts of money involved make every deal easier to pick apart.

Heck of a comeback from MadBum tonight on National TV. 7 Strong innings, 11 strikeouts, and then Affeldt, who I thought was not having a good year, came out and I was amazed. The twins left AT&T swinging and missing, and so did the Indians. I still think the Giants need a threat, but if this pitching staff is firing on all cylinders, man they are a tough team to beat. I'm still proud of Bumgarner tonight though. Last week he went out and pitched the worst game of his young career. Tonight he went out with all the confidence of his manager and pitched his second best game (It will be hard to top the Halloween Night performance in Texas last year) of his career. What a game that was.

Just when I think the Twins have finally turned things around, they get swept by the Brewers and follow that up with a 15-0 shellacking by the Dodgers. I haven't written the Twins off yet, but that small ray of hope is getting mighty dim.

I really do think it's a DL stint for sucking more than anything else. Of all the pitchers in the rotation, Sanchez is the one that I trust the least. Hopefully the Giants can pull off a trade in which he is a part of it because every time he goes out, I think it's going to be a bad start.

Speaking of situations that one can't describe without using the word 'cluster'...the Dodgers just filed for bankruptcy! :wtf:

So, big game tonight. Red Sox - Phillies. Sox lineup seems a bit weird without a DH. Then again, Phillies are out Madson because he's a dumbass. Should be interesting, especially game one. I won't say prelude to the World Series because it's way too early for that.

!@#$ Madson. The only closer on my fantasy team this week just happens to be John Axford now. I dropped another one for underperforming.... so now I might get 1-2 saves this week.

Yeah, he didn't do the smartest of things. Wasn't needed with Cliff Lee on the mound, however.

Hardly surprising; Frank McCourt basically needed to do this, otherwise he would have missed his June 30 payroll and opened the team up to automatic seizure by MLB (which still may happen, depending on what the court says). Remember, this is a shitheel owner who took more than a hundred million bucks out of the piggy bank just to pay for his (and his wife's) expensive lifestyle. (He also has the team divided into a number of shell corporations; for example, if MLB seizes the team, it's possible that he could still retain ownership of the parking lot.)

The bankruptcy filing is, more or less, McCourt openly flipping the bird to Bud; since McCourt has no way to reorganize effectively, this is almost certainly going to a federal bankruptcy court auction now like the Rangers did and the Mets would have without the Einhorn deal (and they still might, since the Wilpons are still $300 million in the hole). It also puts Bud into a panic, because if the Dodgers do go up for auction, Mark Cuban will do his very best to buy them.

Jeez, though ... two teams in federal bankruptcy court and a third missing it by the skin of its teeth, all of it happening in less than a year. MLB really needs to tighten up its debt rules for owners. Which Selig will get right on, I'm sure.

Tonight, the Red Sox have David Ortiz starting at first base, and Adrian Gonzalez in right field.

God help us.

Yeah, interesting.

That being said, since the Red Sox have a problem dealing with the lack of DH this series, I'll take this opportunity to reiterate how stupid the position is. Cliff Lee had a .444 slugging percentage going into the game and got an RBI. He almost beat out the throw to first earlier. He also pitched a lights out baseball game.

You don't need a waste of a position player who, if he were to play in the field, would often be a defensive liability. That's not good baseball.

As much as I like Ortiz, I think I'd rather see the AL go back to making the pitchers hit again. But that's never going to happen, the MLBPA won't allow it. Either the NL will eventually bring in the DH, or the status quo will remain as it currently is.
