2011 IIHF World Junior Championship

Anyone tuning in this year? And perhaps more tellingly, any non-Canadians tuning in this year? ;)

Canada\Russia is on right now, and it's a hell of a game. 3-3 at the second intermission. These two teams just embody hockey, for me... Canada with the physical, gritty play, Russia with the quicker, flashier style. Both teams would be worthy of eventually winning the gold this year, I think. :techman:

The Czechs are usually better than a 7-2 loss.

Meanwhile, Russia fell to Sweden; you'd think we were pre-Alexander Nevsky.

And Russia takes its revenge, with the help of a totally bogus icing non-call.

Meanwhile, we topple the Yanks; sweet indeed.

It's almost embarassing how badly the Canadian crowds outnumber the Americans in their own arenas.

The fact that the three people who have posted in this thread are Canadian shows how much other people care.

I think we should be genuinely concerned about how bad non-Canadian ticket sales are with regards to the future of this tournament.

They've pretty much always been bad; the IIHF is willing to take the hit of scheduling it in Europe every now and then in the vain hope of slowly kindling more interest (much like the NHL's insistence in keeping teams in places like Phoenix).

And really, Canadians haven't become truly interested in the tournament until sometime within the last 10-15 years. I don't remember hearing about it at all when I was a kid.

As well, the IIHF runs plenty of tourneys that no one at all cares about. I mean, when was the last time you tuned in for a game of the world U18s?

Canada/Russia for gold. And after the first period Canada has taken charge with a 2-0 score. :techman:

Blast. Ah, well, you can't win 'em all (and 2nd isn't nothing).

The Russians certainly perfected the art of the come-from-behind win this tournament.

And Canada got foxed. Russia played possum for two periods and suckered Canada into thinking they had it in the bag. then Russia turns it on in the third and scores 5 goals to take the gold. Masterful (albeit risky) strategy.

They played cagey and deserve the win.

Who were those guys in Russian sweaters who came out for the 3rd? Looked like an entirely different team. Either the greatest comeback or biggest collapse depending on how you look at it.

An ice hockey silver medal is the only medal you win by losing your final game.

Canada Choked plain and simple*, they were not the favorites to win anyhow.
I found it funny that all I heard on the radio today was "we're gonna win gold, bla, bla bla,"

And I'm think you idiots are counting your chicken before they hatch.
This Hoser thinks its funny.

(*That or they let the Leafs play the 3rd period, )

I've only just picked my jaw up off the floor.

I'm disappointed, of course but I'm equally impressed. I've seen comebacks like that before even though they're rare. But I can't recall someting like that in such a high-profile, do-or-die game.

My heart's broken but I take solace in the fact that I may never witness anything that objectively awesome ever again.
