2011 Academy Awards

I don't quite understand all the hubub about the Social Network. I admit I have not seen the movie but I don't see how the story of the founding of a web site could be all that compelling.
That's as reductive as people who say The King's Speech has a boring and irrelevant premise. Both make for great human drama.

I will be pissed if Harry Potter is nominted for Best Picture for 8 films.

There is no chance of that happening.

None of the Potter films have so far been nominated for Best Picture. They are what I call good films, not great films.

Gaith has a philosophy with regards to films he does or does not see which is if I recall...

Does it have anything to say about the time in which it's set, either explicitly or subtextually, or could the same story, with minimal alterations, be told in pretty much any era?

So I would be surprised if he saw Inception. Strange that he still feels the need to comment on films despite not seeing them.
Wow, I'm honored that you dug that quote up. :)

As for seeing the movie... I've developed pretty sharp foresight of whether or not I'll like something, based on reviews and my personal tastes, with the result being that I greatly enjoy nearly everything I watch, and everything I hear about Inception loudly suggests that I wouldn't care for it. I enjoy TDK just fine, but a second viewing of The Prestige, which I quite liked the first time around, really lowered my overall Nolan appreciation.

The Kings Speech is at least about overcoming a personal failing at a key point in history. The Social Network is about the start of a website. I just don't see where the compelling story is in that.

^ "The Social Network" isn't just about the start of a social networking website. That's a plot device used to explore the friendship and deterioration of that friendship after the website is established. It is also a character study on a contemporary historical person. It was marketed as "the facebook movie" but is a whole lot more compelling than that and the performances are outstanding.

See, unlike Davros here, at least I get a solid sense of the movies I'm talking about but haven't seen. :p

I've only seen TKAAR, Inception, Toy Story 3 and The Social Network and wasn't blown away by any, but liked Inception best. Bening, despite being top billed, seemed to have more of a supporting role.

What's the point of 10 nominations for best picture? Is it simply a marketing move so more movies can say they've been nominated on the DVD and Blu-ray?

The goal was to get more popular films nominated, since the last half-decade has seen a break from when it was customary for the BP winner to be one of the top ten highest-grossing films of the year.

Which I thought was kinda funny since the year they do that they give the Best Picture award to The Hurt Locker which barely anyone saw, over Avatar, which nearly everyone saw. Not that I have a problem with that- I'm glad Hurt Locker won over Avatar, I just found it funny.

^ To be fair, they were falling over themselves to give best pic/director to a woman, rather than recognize the actual best film. Poor vag-less Quentin... :p

Partly that, partly spreading around the box office bump films get from a Best Picture nod if they're still in theaters, and partly the hope that including more popular hits amongst the films nominated for Best Picture - as CaptainCanada mentioned - will draw better ratings for the Oscars telecast.

Avatar being nominated serves their purpose well enough (though in that particular year it would have been anyway). This year the additional five adds Toy Story 3 and, possibly, Inception to the ranks (the fifth spot would have either been Inception or Black Swan).

From you description it seems to be the exact movie the advertising led me to think it was.

Right, and Macbeth is about witches, and Psycho is about a dead person.
