(2011)-2012 NBA Season

Otherwise, we'd have a lot of problems every time we give someone a warning for trolling or spamming.

What a game in Boston tonight! Lakers win in overtime...

It was not exactly a pretty game, but thank Sweet Baby Jesus we were actually able to get a road win.

:techman:

My dad's less than pleased about the outcome of that game. Personally, it doesn't bother me, but he's much more into the Celtics than I am.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the story. Nice to see the Knicks be known for something positive for a chance.

Nate Silver, who uses statistical analyses to predict (fairly accurately) election results has turned his attention to Jeremy Lin. He seems to think he's the real deal.

I was hoping the Lakers would give this guy a tryout before last season started but it didn't happen. Nice to see he may have found a team he can play for. But I do think it is a bit early to refer to him as the "real deal", if this means "star". Not sure he will be a star or just a consistent contributor, he did bomb out with a few teams before joining the Knicks, so he could be a system guy. D'Antoni's gimmicky offense does favor open court players. But, I wish him well. The Knicks, BTW, are going nowhere until they get rid of D'Antoni.

As for the Lakers/Knicks Friday night, is there any wonder they left their game on the TD Garden floor the night before in that emotional win over the Celts? It is never not a nice thing, beating the C's especially in Boston. Get a good look at their big 3 this season because I think it will be their last together in Boston unless Ainge is unable to find any takers for their overpriced old timers.

There has been talk of a Pau Gasol for Rondo (plus another Celtic to balance the salaries), trade. For a player the caliber of Gasol, the Lakers should receive in return a guard who is at least a complete player, and Rondo is obviously not. So this deal is likely just a radio/fan creation.

Lakers should finish 3-3 on this 6 game road trip, beating Toronto before heading home. But in this crazy season I'm prepared for just about anything including a loss to the Raptors.

Actually, "real deal" might be my words. What he said there are a lot of factors complicating things, but the odds are he'll be an Above Average player with a chance of All Star and a lower chance that he'll be the next Fat Lever.

Knicks come back from a bunch of points with Lin hitting a game winning three (while taking charge to pull it off). He's got some flaws with turnovers, which is not good for a point guard, but he's still playing great for a guy who came out of nowhere.

We still have to see what happens when Carmelo comes back, but the Knicks look like they'll have a good team.

For any fans of Basketball history, I created a Sporcle quiz for NBA Basketball Nicknames. I hope it has a good mix of old and modern. It's still a work in progress if you think there's a name that absolutely should or should not be there.

Fun game.

But, "The Kangaroo Kid" (Billy Cunningham)? Must have been a Philly thing. Never heard of it. Same with "Air Canada" for Vince Carter -- a nick not known outside of Toronto?

How about John "Hondo" Havlichek. Course there's also "Air" Jordan, Dennis "The Worm" Rodman, Hakeem "The Dream", Golden State's mid 80's "Run TMC" (Tim Hardaway, Chris Mullen, and Mitch Richmond), Robert "The Chief" Parish, Cedric, "Cornbread" Maxwell, Larry "Legend" Bird, Magic was also known sometimes as "Buck", but that was strictly an L.A. thing.

BTW, a technicality; Jerry West was given the name, "Zeke from Cabin Creek" by Elgin Baylor long before Isaiah. West is best known as (Mr.) Clutch, around L.A. as "(The) Logo", and on the Lakers' longest running e-mail list (and a few other internet spots) as, "god".

Billy Cunningham is not as well-known, but he's an NBA 50 Great. I always knew him by his nickname and most sources listed it, so I didn't think it was all that obscure.

Vince Carter was Air Canada back when he played for the Raptors as a play off of Michael Jordan as well as where they played their games. I added Vinsanity, though.

Michael Jordan was in, but I added him late. The problem with late additions everyone who played the game before you add a new name is they're counted as wrong. I got tired of seeing Jordan as 0%, so I removed it. Same reason I probably won't add Larry Legend or Mr. Clutch.

I remember Billy Cunningham, just never heard him referred to as The Kangaroo Kid. In fact, I got this one wrong because I didn't know he even had a nickname. Oh well, you learn something everyday.

Yes, after I posted it occurred to me that there must have been a reason you left Jordan and West off since their nick's are so well known.

Well, Jerry I hesitated about. He is Mr. Clutch, but I wasn't sure if his nickname was something added ex post or did people at the time call him that. I wish I could reset the statistics so I can add back Jordan. I had three or four acceptable answers.

ETA: No one mentioned Lin's loss yesterday.

Or, more importantly, ESPN's stupidity

You know, as boneheaded as that headline was, it took me a minute to figure out what everybody was upset about since I've used that phrase if reference to sports outcomes before - just not for a team with an Asian-American star.

That was my reaction. At first I didn't get it because you hear that expression from time to time, chink meaning a small dent or something similar. Is it possible that whoever wrote it simply didn't think about it? Just a major brain fart as it were? Finally I was like, "Ohhh....okay." The expression is usually uttered in a benign context. Didn't an editor catch it almost immediately and take it down?
