2011-12 pilot buzz thread

Smash sounds fun! But if you don't care about Broadway shows, you probably would disagree. Rumor has it that a behind the scenes catfight is brewing between Debra Messing and Katherine McPhee. Fun fun!
I don't care for Broadway shows and don't like Messing or McPhee. So no I won't be watching this.

Thanks for all the updates, Temis. I love this thread. NBC's pickups are really meh for me. I have the least interest in Broadway or a female cop in a tough male-dominated precinct. *sigh* I think they'll now be looking for one or two cool-sounding shows for the ego-boosting potential breakout hit. I really can't guess which one(s) they're gonna pick. This is fun though.

I think they've got their likely hits in Smash and Prime Suspect. (I'm not paying attention to comedies because network comedies all sound the same to me. :rommie:) But NBC has a lot of time to fill, so what's the least bad option now?

Grimm
would be a nichey risk. Reconstruction and REM/Awake are cancellation bait. Wonder Woman could be a high-profile embarrassment, which the other genre shows at least wouldn't be, no matter how hard they flop. That alone might be what dooms Wonder Woman.

Superheroes aren't hot anymore. They already have their serious cop in Prime Suspect. And I still don't think networks like fantastical worlds that much. So my bets are Reconstruction and Playboy!

NBC once again has a lot of real estate to fill with new shows. They ordered eight one-hour scripted shows for the 2010/2011 season and Harry's Law ended up being the only one renewed for a second season. They won't need to order quite as many replacements because The Voice will fill a couple of those slots, but they probably need six new one-hour scripted shows. With Smash and Prime Suspect ordered to series that leaves eight pilots - 17th Precinct, A Mann's World, Grimm, Playboy, Reconstruction, REM/Awake, S.I.L.A./Metro, and Wonder Woman - vying for four slots. With 17th Precinct said to be dead and A Mann's World said to be highly unlikely, it narrows it down to six pilots vying for four slots.

I'll place my bets: I say Reconstruction and Wonder Woman are the odd pilots out. The former is too risky for NBC (a real historical drama, pre-WWII era that modern audiences might find hard to relate to) and the latter has had too much advance publicity. NBC doesn't want to risk of a high-profile flop.

That leaves Grimm and REM/Awake, which both have cop-show aspects that make them palatable risks. Playboy will be valued for its alleged sex appeal (on broadcast? I think they're kidding themselves but that won't become obvious until fall).

Playboy has the jiggle factor of Wonder Woman, but also seems tonier because of the Mad Men halo. NBC will feel less embarrassed and more grown-up touting Playboy vs. WW.

I haven't heard much about S.I.L.A./Metro, but it seems like NBC needs a "standard" cop show among the pickups to balance out the risk.

I hope you are wrong cause I am gonna need a good laugh. :rommie:

So what's your picks for the two odd pilots out? ;)

(I actually hope I'm wrong about my picks - I'd watch both WW and Reconstruction at least until they prove unwatchable. I'd rather that S.I.L.A./Metro and Playboy were the ones who got passed over, but I'm realistic about how much genre stuff any network will tolerate at one time, especially since they kept Chuck.)

Here's an article that explains why so much of TV is crap. Mostly it's stuff we already know, but for the record...

All kinds of things can turn a promising idea into a flop. Casting may not click. A story line that made for a compelling pilot can't hold an audience's interest for 22 episodes a season, a fate that befell ABC's "FlashForward." Overly acquiescing to focus groups can lead to a bland finished product, producers say. Last season didn't lead to a single breakout success.

There is no formula...I know of for creating a hit show...alot of things just have to happen...it really is about luck and networks are out to make money...not friends.

WONDER WOMAN!!! :p

:D

[edit] The biggest problem with TV is it is time consuming and expensive...there really are no Ifs, Ands or Buts...the shows have to be hot or they are gone...but I am not sure the grading scale matches the current TV climate. Just my own personal thought.

Oh, I just remembered that NBC might pick up The Firm, which has been developed outside of the traditional pilot process. If that happens it could knock another NBC pilot out of contention.

Bwak bwak! :rommie: Not willing to stick your neck out, huh?

I'd forgotten about that one - very low on the buzz meter.

I can't heaaar yoooouuu.... :rommie:

I'd rather see Wonder Woman than The Firm. Ugh. I have a horrible feeling that NBC is going to feel the need to inflict a lawyer show on us.

To be honest there aren't too many current shows I am interested in...I was loving LUX...gone, The Cape...gone, Smallville is ending it's 10th season/serie...so no biggie there...I like the Vampire Diaries...but I am not at the point where I just have to rewatch the series on DVD...I was just getting into Breaking In...but gone. Most of the other stuff I like the show ended years ago...Like FRIENDS, Voyager & TNG...Buffy...etc...so I would be happy to see how things like Wonder Woman & The Secret Circle turn out...I am not invested as much as it seems when I spaz out in these thread. :p

If NBC does end up not picking up Wonder Women (its the yo/yo show of pilot season) I would not be surprised because just the concept of it in this day n age as a weekly TV show seems laughable...Its got flop written all over it.

I mean the whole she's not wearing stupid short 70's hotpants, I mean shorts  tell you about its real fanbase being stuck in the past so they probably will pass on it and your going to struggle to get a large fanbase of new viewers.

Talking about pilot season is always more entertaining than seeing the product in the fall. :rommie:

What I really want is for someone to upload the failed pilots to YouTube. That will never be allowed because it would embarrass the networks too much, but I'm really curious to see 17th Precinct for example. And I want to see for myself whether Locke & Key is "too scary for TV."

EW's pro's and cons on WW.

Here's my theory about whassup at NBC: They desperately need not just hits but also a brand identity. CBS is cop shows for old people, FOX is guys, ABC is girls, CW is young girls who like vampires. What is NBC ("failure" is not an option)? :D

With the new honcho, Greenblatt, coming in from Showtime, and a pre-existing skew in what audience they have towards the higher-income levels, I can see an attempt being made to make NBC "AMC junior" just like AMC is "HBO junior" - an audacious, vault-five-levels attempt to make NBC not just a success but a classy success.

That would shed a whole new light on their moves so far: Smash and Prime Suspect are very AMC-feeling shows; A Mann's World (now almost certainly dead), not so much. Chuck is a reasonable fit, since despite its ratings, it has a rep for quality (mostly just a rep at this point, but it can coast for half another season on it.)

Of the genre shows, only REM/Awake seems like a fit for the AMC style. Playboy, S.I.L.A., Reconstruction and maybe that low-flying lawyer show would get pickups; Wonder Woman and Grimm would be the rejects.

I hope not, because Grimm is the other series besides Locke & Key that I most wanted to see, but I'm used to being disappointed by frakking pilot season!!!

I do remember those leaked pilots from previous years but I wasn't curious about any of them. This year there are going to be several I'd want to see. If anyone spots one, send up an alert!!! :rommie:
