We'll get a small release in the USA of Enhiran. Down the road either film could be remade by Hollywood...

Now there's a line I thought I'd never see

RA.1 will probably do good business, being Shahrukh. I'll probably see that one (the wife's a big fan of his, and I enjoyed Main Hoon Na, among others.)

Endhiran... depends who else is in it.

Either way, they can't be as mind-buggeringly dire as the first Bollywood SF blockbuster, Koi Mil Gaya, which is so sugary it makes ET look like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Actually, it makes Mac And Me look like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre... The sequel, Krrish (the first big Bolly superhero movie) was a lot better.

Please tell me they aren't musicals. That's the one aspect of Bollywood that long ago moved out of the "charming" range into the "annoying" range for me. It seems like there's some law saying movies out of India (or at least those that get any distribution/TV broadcast in North America) have to stop the story dead every few minutes for an extravagant song and dance number. The idea of a dancing and singing robot sounds like something more suited for Edward D. Wood Jr.

It'd be nice if they could release it in the US (IF it is any good)

...Subtitled films can do well.. remember Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon?

I am hoping we'll also see Star Blazers by next year....

They probably will be - certainly with Shahrukh and Ashwarya Rai in them.

It's a cultural thing- non-musicals simply bomb in India. There are non-musical Bollys, but they tend to be more indie films, geared for export, and they just do not perform at the Indian box office.

To the Indian audience, a film without songs is like... I dunno, a monochrome film would be to us - they occasionally happen, and often are very good, but they'll die a quick death at the box office

You know, it wouldn't be a Bollywood film WITHOUT those song and dance numbers - still I wish they'd vary the formula a bt once in a while for a science fction themed film. ;)

I love Bollywood movies. The dance routines can be so cheesy but if you get the cnace to see some performed on stage go for it - it's hugely entertaining. A sci fi mix will be interesting - I wonder if they'll have space bikinis?

Enthiran (Robot) could be profitable before a single showing

Endhiran [AKA "The Robot"] is a scifi action movie about a robot - an android.

It opens today.
Enthiran is rumored to have cost between 160 and 190 crore rupees ($35-40 million) to produce, making it the most expensive Indian film made yet. Though, several upcoming films, including Shahrukh Khan's upcoming Ra. One, are looking to steal that title as though it were a badge of honor. Here's an amazing piece of information to chew on, though. The worldwide distribution rights have been sold only in the last few weeks, and the total amount making the rounds is around 205 crore rupees ($45 million). According to my bookkeeping, that means that this movie could become profitable before a single butt hit a seat in a theater. Incredible. The reason the rights have been sold so high is simple: Unless the Earth plunges into a nuclear winter tonight, they are virtually guaranteed to make a profit.

A recent estimate predicted that Enthiran will make back its production cost over the first weekend. WeekEND, not even the whole week! The film is releasing on 2250 screens around the world, an incredible number, and 30 screens in Chennai alone. You can bet that every showing in Chennai will be sold out for at least a week, in fact, several theaters are already booking the second and third weeks of the film's run.

a listing of the theaters showing Enthiran (Tamil) around the US is at the link below:

game and movie RA.ONE

Like some other big Hollywood blockbusters RA.ONE has a game for PS3 releasing in September.
'RA.ONE - The Game' has been developed exclusively on key PlayStation platforms of PS2 and PS3 (through PSN download)
The game, being developed under the active supervision of the game development team of SCEE based out of London, will almost act as a prequel to the film to introduce the key film characters and the various super-powers the film has.
It will provide an opportunity to players to play as the key characters of the film: Ra.One or G.One.
Displaying six unique characters and more than 20 game play
environments from the 'RA.ONE Universe',
'RA.ONE - The Game' will be rolled out in the India market and other key markets towards the end of September in close co-ordination with the actual film launch date.

I like that there are game play environments from the universe but that doesn't exactly mean actual locations from the film.
Still another scifi action game from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) .

also of note in the Indian scifi film market:
"Chaand 2013" in 3-D
big action adventure sci-fi movie about aliens coming and how they attack Mumbai and India,

It would be in the line of Will Smith-starrer Hollyood film ‘Independence Day’, divulged Sidhartha.
‘The film will be in 3D. It will have all the elements of alien spaceships attacking and how our heroes save the country,’ he said.
for Summer 2013. no cast yet.

An official customised 'Ra.One' channel was launched on YouTube, a first for an Indian film, where audiences can see theatrical promos, songs, events, uncut footage, videos of 'Ra.One' premiere and red carpet events.

This is Bollywood's largest budget film ever.
imdb says:
Budget: USD$25,000,000 (estimated).

Think it over. Not bad that a scifi action genre movie is their largest budget film ever...

Adhisaya Ulagam 3D, India's First Dinosaur Movie in 3D!

talk about a setback.
Adhisaya Ulagam 3D

wow. And we all knew the SyFy original movie CGI fests were bad. This tops them all. and it is actually going to be in cinemas in India!
There is a 1:20 length video at the link below for the trailer.

This looks like a video game from the early 90's at best, and at worst it kinda reminds me of those music videos you could make at amusements parks with green screens. In either case, it looks fucking awful, which, of course, means I want to see it right now.
