Overall, very depressing. The over-reliance on cop shows and variations thereof is astounding. But hunting and picking reveals a few shows with potential, particularly now that some casting has been completed.

ABC

Cutthroat
A one-hour dramedy about an ambitious single mother who finds that running her own international drug cartel is perfect training for navigating the cutthroat world of Beverly Hills high society.

Sounds good mainly because it comes from the same comedy team behind Reaper. A lot depends on the lead casting.

No Ordinary Family
Strange things begin to happen when your typical American family suddenly finds themselves with new "abilities." Navigating how to deal with being "super" is only part of the story -- after all, they are still a family.
Cast - Michael Chiklis (Jim)

It's sf/f, so I'll check it out, tho I wish Chiklis' power were more interesting than just superstrength.

How to Be a Better American
A father embarks on a journey to be a better person and drags his family along kicking and screaming.

Depending on how well they cast the lead, this might be worthwhile.

CBS

Chaos
A group of rogue CIA operatives combat bureaucratic gridlock, rampant incompetence and political infighting.
Cast - Freddy Rodriguez (Rick)

Interested in this solely because they cast Rodriguez as the lead.

CW

Betwixt
Revolves around "changelings" in an urban setting who are responsible for saving humans from evil.

I feel duty-bound to check out anything sf/f, even on the CW.

FOX

Worthy
A subversively comedic look at an aspiring politician who gets sucked into a world of crime and larger-than-life characters after he accidentally kills a low-level thug in a powerful local gang.

They NEED to cast Adrian Pasdar as the lead. Seriously. I feel like writing people letters about this. :rommie:

In Security
An office comedy about a cute but slighty awkward guy who joins a digital security firm; amongst the oddball group of geniuses, he finally finds a place he can fit in.
Cast - Bret Harrison (Cameron)

Interested in this solely because they cast Harrison as the lead.

The Station
A covert CIA operative and his workmates are embedded in a South American country and must navigate their mission to install a new dictator in this banana republic with its own unique set of challenges.
Cast - John Goodman (Ted), Justin Bartha (Eric), Rob Huebel (Hank), Carla Gallo (Andrea), Jordan Peele (Joe), Jose Zuniga (Sherman)

This is by far my favorite new network pilot. Since it is being developed by Ben Stiller. I'm really hoping for an outlandish Tropic Thunder approach.

NBC

The Event
A thriller with a unique storytelling device and multiple points of view about a regular guy fighting his way through the mysterious circumstances of a larger conspiracy.

Could be a lot of fun - I'll give it a chance.

The Cape
A former cop is set up as a criminal and becomes a masked hero to clear his name and reunite with his son

Depending on the lead casting, it could be worthwhile.

And that's a pretty short list of pickups for NBC! Either they still have a long way to go, or maybe Heroes and even Trauma and/or Mercy have a hope of coming back?

This doesn't count the intriguing pilots on cable, including:

AMC

Walking Dead
- zombie show with Frank Darabont writing and directing.

SYFY

Haven
- based on the novella The Colorado Kid from Stephen King. Emily Rose will play the lead role of Audrey Parker, the shrewd and confident FBI agent with a lost past who arrives in the small town of Haven, Maine to solve the murder of a local ex-con. Before long, her natural curiosity lands her in the epicenter of activity in this curious enclave, which turns out to be a longtime refuge for people that are afflicted with a remarkable range of supernatural abilities.

TNT

Spielberg alien invasion series starring Noah Wylie.

HBO

Boardwalk Empire - Set in 1920 at the dawn of Prohibition, this new drama series chronicles the life and times of Nucky Thompson, the undisputed leader of Atlantic City, who was equal parts politician and gangster. Steve Buscemi stars as Thompson. Martin Scorsese is executive producer.

It's missing from the DevWatch list, but NBC is also developing Midnight, Mass (based on the DC/Vertigo comic book), which is a "drama about a sophisticated, sexy, globe-trotting husband-and-wife team who solve mysteries and crimes of the supernatural."

I've read reviews of the pilot scripts for No Ordinary Family and The Cape, and the former is a comedy/drama about a family that develops superpowers and how that affects their lives (no costumed heroics involved), while The Cape would be a first for television superhero shows: a drama that fully embraces the comic book trope of costumed superheroes and supervillains (most superhero drama shows have either eschewed costumes entirely or had a costumed hero who mostly fight non-costumed villains; heretofore it's only been the odd superhero comedy that's fully embraced costumes all around).

Superhero shows are all the rage this development season. There's also Alphas, which Syfy has ordered as a 90-minute pilot. It was first developed for NBC in the 2008/2009 development season under the title Section 8. Here's it's description:

Alphas follows a team of ordinary citizens who possess extraordinary and unusual mental skills. Using physical feats and mental trickery, this elite force of heroes take the law into their own hands and uncover what the CIA, FBI and Pentagon have not been able or willing to solve. Each possessing their unique and not always visible power, they alone solve the crime, stop the ticking time bomb and catch the enemy.
There's also an adaptation of Powers, the Brian Michael Bendis comic book about two homicide detectives who investigate crimes involving superheroes and supervillains, in the works at FX.

In terms of SFF shows, there's also of course A Game of Thrones at HBO, which is looking good to be ordered to series.

Has that pilot been picked up? It would be good to hear about any other sf/f show in the mix. No more cop shows, please! :rommie:

Given the short NBC list, even if it hasn't been picked up yet, NBC is going to have to pick up a lot of stuff soon.

I'm still crossing my fingers that NBC will pick up Rex Is Not Your Lawyer for the fall...

Ahh yes Cutthroat, aka Weeds 3.0.

But yeah, I don't think people realize how important a lead actor is to a show. If MLP wasn't the lead of Weeds it would have bombed.

There's a rumor that Jamie Bamber is the frontunner to play the lead in The Walking Dead.

Cool! He's a cutey and I've missed him since BSG went off the air. Where are the rumors being reported? I always like discovering a new rumor site...

Now they just need to cast Katee Sackhoff as the Zombie Queen. :rommie:

They went thru some strange sequence where they picked it up and then dropped it. I wonder what all that was about.

Comic Book Resources passed along the rumor from Big Shiny Robot, although having now read the original report it seems that CBR got their wires crossed a bit. They reported that Bamber is the lead contender for the role of Rick and that Stuart Townsend and Mark Pellegrino are up for other roles. But as you can see from Big Shiny Robot's report the three are actually all reputed to be contending for the lead role.

Wow! Sorry Jamie, but Mark Pellegrino would be an awesome choice for the role.
And really, doesn’t he look like a guy that would make the hard choices in a zombie apocolypse?

Yeah, we need a guy who can scare the zombies! :rommie:

They never officially picked it up. There were plenty of rumors going around that it was going to be used as one of the replacements for Leno's primetime slot, but there was never an official pick up.

The sets have been put into "fold and hold", which is actually a good thing; they would probably have completely gotten rid of the sets if they weren't planning on coming back to the show, perhaps for some later re-shoots to prepare the pilot for airing in the fall...?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. *crosses fingers*

Emily Rose...

They said Emily Rose was in Jericho but I can't remember who she was! "Trish Merrick"? Was she the bar owner? :wtf:

Here's a good source for casting rumors. Keep paging thru it, they appear after a couple screens.

I may have to decide I like Edgar Floats if Lee Pace gets the lead role. "Drama about a police psychologist who becomes a bounty hunter." Lee Pace as a bounty hunter, huh? :wtf::wtf::wtf:

Emily Rose was the young blond recurring doctor during the final season of ER. I never watched Jericho.
