2009 Hallmark Ornaments - NOT Trek XI? WTF?

I like the ornament of the Klingon cruiser...until I choked on the $32 price tag.

No ornament is worth that. And I say that with respect to the artisans who create them. But in these times is that a realistic price to put on those?

^ Just look at what people are paying for the classic Enterprise from 1991 or the Enterprise-E. I think they're cheap.

The ebay listing's I've seen - with the exception of the very first ornament released - have all been for half, or less, their MSRP. In the last few months, I've been Enterprise-D ornaments going for under three dollars. Thirty-two bucks for a Klingon ship? No, thanks. I'll go with the eight dollar Johnny Lightning ship.

To answer your question, Yeoman Randi, I've been immersed in Star Trek from the very beginning. I graduated from high school in 1966 and was overwhelmed by the introduction of the Star Trek TV series in that same year. During 1967 when I entered military service, the entire barracks would empty into the only location with a color television to see new episodes. I joined the sculpting studio at Hallmark in 1987 and was soon offered the opportunity to sculpt the first Star Trek ornament, the 1991 USS Enterprise NCC-1701. You would have been proud of me, as the early concept drawings for the ornament had the saucer section draped with holiday garland and Santa popping out of the bridge. My editor, Tina Hacker and I were both fans and waged war against the product-development-team to get it right. We were successful and I married her six years later.

I retired from Hallmark in 2006, but continue to sculpt new Star Trek ornaments from my home studio.

Hey, Chris3123, thanks for posting images of the JJ Prise ornament from Comic Con. I wasn't able to make the trip and I only got some low resolution images from my crew at Hallmark. It was a treat to sculpt and I hope it will find its place in your fleet next year.

Thanks for the compliment, Bender23. I only wish it could have been delivered this year instead of next. Since Hallmark debuts the ornament line in mid summer, there wasn't enough time. I didn't even get the final artwork until two weeks before the movie released.

ACK! I am soooo glad you won that one!! Holiday garland and santa? REALLY???????

Sweet story about you and your wife. I love it!!!

What a great job to have had, being a fan and all. Kudos to you for all the fine work you've done. Oh, my '91 Enterprise is probably my most treasured possession of my entire Trek collection. It is a beauty (and it still works!)

Thank you. It's been my pleasure. The '91 Enterprise was my first ornament so I gave 18 of them to friends and relatives. They were puzzled by the strange gift at the time, but now consider the ornament to be a treasure. I only kept 2 for myself. Who knew?

This is directed at FlyBoy. I just wanted to pass along a little story about the 1991 Enterprise.

We had seen the ornament in a hallmark store in july of 1991 while on vacation. I was 10 at the time and really really really wanted it. My parents thinking that it was not going to be a big deal passed on purchasing it at that time. Well as i'm sure you know they sold like gangbusters and disappeared from the shelves at "warp speed". On Christmas Eve my mother was in a walgreens and noticed that somehow they still had their display model. It had slipped past everyone else and through some creative means she was able to buy it (though the manager was not happy)
ON Christmas morning this 10 year old got the surprise of his life, that little ornament blinking and glowing on the tree, and now as a 28 year old that ornament still brings joy to me, like it did yesterday when it went on the tree again and started blinking and glowing.

This is just a small thank you for your hard work and the joy you brought to many people.

Thanks again!

Look at posts #8 and #19 above. :techman:

Since the NX-01 had a metallic skin, the product-development-team at Hallmark chose to make a die-cast metal ornament for superior appearance. The entire ornament was nickel plated after final assembly which prohibited the installation of electrical components inside the ornament. That's why it was offered with a display base which contained recorded voice commands from Captain Archer. The TV series was new at the time, and I sculpted the ornament during the winter holidays in order to get it delivered by October in the new year.

Even though I'm more of an original series fan, I thought that the NX-01 ornament was nicely done.

I am looking at that ornament right now. Why is it so oddly shaped.

A bit of a side question: the calendars for the new film; are they any good? Has anyone seen the 2010 Star Trek calendars including the ones based on the new film?

I've always enjoyed your work on the Trek ornaments from 1991 onward. I own them all. I'm amazed that Hallmark got Nimoy to record the greeting on the 1992 shuttlecraft. They must have backed up a truckload of cash.

Some favorites are the 1991 ship, the NCC-1701 from a few years ago (stand says 'celebrating 40 years') and the NCC-1701-A from a couple years ago that seems to be exactly in scale with that earlier pre-refit counterpart.

I'm glad the Miranda-class was released. How about Excelsior? :D

The saucer seems a little bulbous. Is it because of the lighting inside?

I'm looking forward to next year. She looks like a beaut!

The new movie calendar exists. I saw it at a calendar shop in Lancaster a few weeks ago.
