2009 Hallmark Ornaments - NOT Trek XI? WTF?

You would think with the first new material out since 2005, the first film since 2002, and something garnering significant buzz and critical acclaim... that Paramount would surely capitalize on this by having the annual Star Trek Hallmark Ornaments reflect Trek XI, right?

You could easily see the new Enterprise, or the two Spock's, or something else, right?

No.

Instead, despite all of the overwhelming reasons to do Trek XI, we've been treated to more of the same...

Now, I'll admit: the 30th anniversary of TMP K'Tinga class Klingon Battle Cruiser looks swanky. It's quite detailed, not at all the old D-7.

But the Kirk/Spock/Pike one looks... well, cheesy. And an ornament of the TOS type-1 phaser? WTF?!

:wtf:

I have every ornament they've ever done. Every. Single. One. I spent years collecting them. I've been buying them since 1997, and managed to acquire all the back ones, some at quite a cost in their day! I've understood the past few years with Trek on the rocks, doing some less-than-stellar ornaments mixed in with the occasional great ones -- great ones like the 1701-A, and last years Uhura, the first return to single-character diorama ornaments in a decade or so -- but... this is getting horribly bad.

I knew we wouldn't have the new Trek ornaments for the original 2008 release, since the ornaments are unveiled months before, begin being sold in August, and they'd not want to reveal that much that soon. But when they pushed it to May of 09, I said, "surely they'll do Trek XI ornaments now, as they'll be revealed around the same time as the film comes out, and be perfect for holiday gifts for new trekkies."

...:shifty:

Idiots. Idiots, I tell you. Hallmark are a bunch of idiots!

I understand your frustration. I know I'm probably in the minority on this, but I wanted a NX-01 Enterprise, and to my knowledge, they never did that one. Didn't make sense.

Enjoy the TOS stuff while it lasts.

It's probably going to be a glut of Abrams-themed merchandise for years to come. Just look at how 90% of the Star Wars merchandise released is prequel-based.

From my understanding, based on word from friends of mine who work at Hallmark, the reason for the lack of a new movie "E" ornament is simple: Hallmark has a development cycle of 12-18 months for such projects, and the design for the ship wasn't provided to them in time to do anything with it.

^^^ Yeah, that's right. Hallmark work on this stuff way in andvance of the release date so it'll be next year before we get the Abrams Enterprise. Actually, I like the Pike piece. Just a pity I have to send to the States for these pieces, the Hallmark stores over here don't stock them :(

I totally disagree. It may have been true while the films were out but all I'm seeing is original trilogy merchandise everywhere I go now. Occasionally I'll see some Clone stuff but the majority of what I see is the IV - Vi stuff.

I'm sure it's a licensing issue as far as the Ornaments are concerned. AFAIK, they work these deals out years in advance. Don't be shocked to see one this season or next.

Wow, I wish I had actually read this before my last post. Whoops. ;)

I'm one of the Hallmark sculptors and I actually received the assignment for the J.J. Enterprise back in February of '08. When the movie release was delayed I sculpted the Klingon Battle Cruiser as an emergency back up for the '09 ornament line. I hope you will be pleased with the 2010 ornaments that are being debuted this weekend in San Diego.

They did do an NX-01, but not in the traditional sense like the other ornaments. This one came with a base. But it does have a hook to be hung with your other ships :

Eh...I don't know about that. There seems to be a greater love of classic-type stuff with Star Trek than there is with Star Wars. That's just how it seems to me.

Since the NX-01 had a metallic skin, the product-development-team at Hallmark chose to make a die-cast metal ornament for superior appearance. The entire ornament was nickel plated after final assembly which prohibited the installation of electrical components inside the ornament. That's why it was offered with a display base which contained recorded voice commands from Captain Archer. The TV series was new at the time, and I sculpted the ornament during the winter holidays in order to get it delivered by October in the new year.

Thank you Yeoman Randi. I'm always pleased to get a positive review. My ultimate goal is to have the coolest decorations in my own home, especially when Trek fans come for a holiday visit. Bring on the Romulan Ale.

^ Flyboy, tapping my glass to yours!

It must have been exceptionally awesome for you to get the job to do the ships, being a trek fan yourself. Or did you become one after you were given the assignment?

Flyboy, that NX-01 ornament is awesome. Great job!

I am pretty stoked about the 2010 JJ-prise ornament. Any chance you could post any clean images of it?
