2008 Beijing Olympics Thread

Anyone else excited for the Olympics coming up in a month. I've been looking forward to it since the start of the year and am really excited about the US olympic squad again. Coughlin got another world record, Phelps is still the man, and the Gymnastics and Diving squads look as strong as ever. Still, even if there isn't success (I'm sure there will be) I'm looking forward to this time to see the world come together for another Olympic games. Yeah, I know there are a lot of political aspects of it and hopefully nothing goes wrong, and the environment sucks, but from a competition aspect, I can't wait.

I'm looking forward to the Olympics. I like the winter games better, but I always enjoy the summer games as well. For the most case, I never watch the sports that are featured in the Olympics, so it's interesting to see them (especially swimming and diving).

Whenever the summer games come around, a bunch of us do a "bar pentathalon" as a sort of tribute to the games (actually, it's just an excuse for a roadtrip). We play pool, darts, horseshoes, bowling and video games: There's a point system (3 for 1st, 2 for 2nd, 1 for 3rd and nothing if you don't place), and the top scorer gets free beer and a laurel made of buckthorn.

The only events I find interesting to watch in the Olympics are the team sports. Track&field is an incredible bore imo.

First thing I thought of when I saw "bar pentathlon" was that you were going to make a drinking game out of the olympics. Thank god I was wrong. ;)

I am pretty excited. I will be in China for a month, including the first week of the Olympics. Me, my wife, and two of my good friends will be going to the Olympics.

^Saul,

So it's hard to keep politics seperate from competition? If I wanted to get into the political aspect of it, I would have posted this thread in TNZ, not here. In terms of non political reasons, there probably aren't any, but they applied, and were chosen by the olympic committee. I don't agree with it, but what's done is done. The olympics are still going to happen, and I am interested in talking about the actual games instead of the political angle. You're free to have opinions just like anyone else, but why can't we seperate politics from games?

The Olympics are the only time I become interested in sports. No idea why. :rommie:

The women's gymnastics team looks great this year.

That and the riots should be interesting. ;) But if I should travel to TNZ for that discussion, no problemo.

I'm a bigger fan of the Winter Olympics, but I'll probably tune in here and there. I haven't watched the Summer Olympics since 2000.

You missed some good stuff in Athens then. Heck, I didn't like Gymnastics but after watching some highlights of Paul Hamm and Carly Patterson, and seeing some of this years team, I can't wait. In fact, I think the only event I don't like is track and feild because before I thought it was boring but now I think it's boring and tainted.

I always like watching the Olympics. I usually watch gymnastics, track and field, swimming and volleyball.

I missed the opening week or two because I was backpacking part of the Appalachian Trail for a month, and then at that point, I didn't feel like jumping in. *shrug*

Nice, hope that was an awesome trip. :techman:

I actually lost interest in the second week after the swimming and Gymnastics were done.

I'm looking forward to them. This is the first year I've actually had channels that show the Olympics, so I'm hoping to watch a few good things. Do you guys know if the archery competition gets shown on television? The top American female archer, Jennifer Nichols, lives in the same city that I do, and while I haven't met her yet, she apparently practices at the same range I do. With any luck, I can see her in action when the competitions roll around! :)

You probably won't see archery in prime time, but it might be carried on one of NBC's "sister stations" at some God-ugly hour. That's one of the (few) good things about network coverage nowadays: You can actually see some of the "non-premiere" sports. Back in 1976, my cousin competed in the Montreal olympics in trap shooting. I was just a kid back then, but I would have loved to have been able to watch him shoot (then again, knowing what a loser he became, maybe's it's better that I didn't).
