2001 things to do before you die

Miss Chicken

Little three legged cat with attitude
Admiral
I have just scanned through a book with this title and I decided to select 1% of the things (i.e.20 things) and see how many people have done them.

1) write your name in wet cement
2) chop wood
3) make paper dolls
4) slide down a banister
5) create your own comic strip
6) learn to juggle more than three balls
7) make your own bread
8) bowl a 300
9) tango
10) pan for gold
11) serve on a jury
12) win a game of Trivial Pursuit
13) attend a Star trek convention
14) build a tree house
15) be an extra in a movie

17) go up the down escalator

4) [x] oh yes, all the time in school; we had the perfect banister for that and the teachers hated it. :D
6) [ ] hm, I'm ok with 3 balls, have never tried 4 though
7) [x] yes, with this recipe. It tastes amazing, but the downside is that you have to start preparing it 24 hours in advance, so when I'm out of bread and hungry, I just buy it in the store.
8) [ ] yeah right; I'm happy when I even reach the triple digits. ;)
16) [x] easy
17) [x] yup, did that all the time as a kid
18) [ ] no, why?
19) [x] I do that regularly.

Mad Cow Disease and donating blood

Situation in the USA

In December 2003, the first case of BSE in the United States was detected in a dairy cow in the state of Washington. Before that, a devastating, major outbreak occurred in the United Kingdom (England and Ireland) in the 1980s. BSE and resulting cases of vCJD in humans have been diagnosed in the UK and in European countries such as Bosnia-Herzegovina, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Norway, Sweden, and Yugoslavia. Because there is no way to detect BSE in blood, people who have lived in these areas from 1980 to the present are not allowed to donate blood in the US, under January 2002 guidelines from the US Food and Drug Administration.

Situation in Australia

Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD)
Although the number of cases of vCJD (the human form of 'mad cow disease' or bovine spongiform encephalopathy) in the United Kingdom is declining, in the absence of a screening test, the full extent of exposure is not known.
Since 2004, there have been a small number of reported cases of patients in the United Kingdom (UK) diagnosed with vCJD who have been infected through blood transfusion.

Based on this information, and in the absence of a reliable screening test for vCJD in blood, the Blood Service has implemented policies to reduce the risk of vCJD transmission through blood transfusion in Australia. Currently we exclude people from donating who:
  • Have resided in the UK between 1 January 1980 and 31 December 1996 for a total (cumulative) time of 6 months or more,
or
  • Have received blood transfusions in the UK since 1 January 1980.
Unfortunately, because of the extensive time period covered by the deferral and the possibility of unknowing exposure to beef or beef products, it is not possible to exempt vegetarians who have resided in the UK for a cumulative period of six months or more during the risk years.
