AlboOfBorg

Commander
Red Shirt
Ok so yes, that was the best thread title I could come up with...

Back around 1987 when ST: TNG came out (and I was about 10 years old), I remember that I didn't like watching the original Star Trek because everything about it felt so outdated and old, like the bridge design, unforms, the musical score, hairstyles, etc. that were from the 60's). It's funny because now that it's been about 20 years since ST: TNG came out, The Enterprise-D still seems pretty cool in terms of design and the uniforms still seem kinda cool (except for the man-skirt... *shudders*). Anyone else feel the same way as me?

I still like the look of TNG even after 20.

I think that it's aged well even though it doesn't seem to be a popular opinion on these forums. I grew up with TNG so it will always be my favorite.

Pretty much my thoughts. TNG is the best-looking of the Star Trek shows in my opinion, mainly for the lovely Ent-D decor and design.

Would the Enterprise-D work as a starship if TNG were released now in 2008? Would it look up to date and such in terms of style? I think so...

Yup.

I like the VOY-era ship interiors too.

Me too. I actually think Voyager will show the least wear (appearance wise) over time. The first season of TNG screamed 1980s whereas the clothing and hairstyles in VOY seem at least a little more timeless. The effects are also good enough that they won't become too outdated for the most part. The dark interior of the bridge is really the only thing I could see going "out of style" on Voyager.

I think that seasons 3-7 still hold well, visually. However, seasons 1 & 2 (especially season 1) scream 1980s to me.

As for the thread title, I would have gone with "It was 20 years ago today..." which it technically wasn't--but who really cares? Of course then, people would just nitpick you on that and you would have realized that your original title would have been a lot less trouble.

Anyway, TNG is extremely dated to my eyes. That bridge, god, that bridge. Awesome place to watch the Super Bowl; completely useless command center for a big space ship.

I can totally see the night watch crew kicking back and watching a movie, or the live feed from a Springball tournament, and hoping that Riker doesn't run a surprise, insomnia-induced inspection. With the limit availability of the holodecks our heroes must have watched some TV, right?

If I were serving aboard the Enterprise I would program the image of a Borg cube approaching as a viewscreen screen saver, just to mess with people. But Data would probably punch me in the head.

I came to like TNG art design, and it also improved a lot over the run. But in the beginning, it was so 1980s: big hair, and a color scheme that made our most futuristic starship look like a Perkin's. It eventually became timeless, but -- YOW! Not at first.

The first few seasons of TNG are quite dated (as has been said). The one piece uniforms, the special effects, even the dialogue between characters. I also agree that Voyager has a better overall look. As for TOS, some episodes looked better than others. Lighting, camera angles and dialogue changed dramatically from episode to episode.

DS9 had a strange look. Many sets, in closeups, looked like they were made out of styrofoam. Enterprise had a great look, but it didn't really fit into the rest of Star Trek.

The later seasons of TNG (3-7) hold up very well, especially (IMHO) as the lighting and camera work got so much better (not to mention the costumes). I have repeatedly said that TNG S1 and S2 look far more dated than TOS.

S 1 & 2 have some standout episodes but they do have 80s written all over them. I was a senior in high school when it came out and was hungry for new Trek at the time, but it has not held up as well as I would like. I think the best look of the ship was the battle bridge, and we didn't see it enough. At least it made a few apperances in S1.

I also feel this way. When TNG first started I was on 4 and I have always felt like TOS doesn't appeal to me because it feels so oudated and borderline corny (please don't bash me for my opinion). While I feel TOS is very nostalgic for many people it never appealed to me. I grew up on TNG and that was the first Star Trek I loved and grew fond of.

Even now TNG still seems pretty cool and futuristic and I don't feel like I am watching an ancient show when I am watching it. Perhaps because TNG is far less removed from current time than TOS is.

"It was twenty years ago today
Sgt.Pepper taught the band to play"

Ooooops...wrong forum, lets go back to the script. :)

Anyway, around the time one of my stations started to air TNG, I had actually watched "STII-The Wrath Of Khan" plus some early episodes which were aired on another channel and it was the second way around for me. I missed the interaction betwen Kirk, Spock and McCoy and the first season of TNG was a little dissapointment, like "is that all there is" or so.

But during the first season, I was getting into TNG, starting to like the characters more and more and became a fan. I also think that TNG was getting better and better for each episode I watched.

Around season 3 when TNG was reaching its peak, I had more and less "converted" to TNG, finding it the best one of the two of them, although I still liked (and still like) TOS too. It's easy to keep them apart and like both because they are different when it comes to the timeline both in "our reality" and the Star Trek timeline.

random factoid......I was born the day before TNG premiered.

as for the first few TNG seasons....they are more outdated than TOS. nothing wrong with that though. its a fine tv show, even in it's early years.

The Early TNG episodes do loke dated, but it has been 2o years since TNG first premiered. TNG is still very cool for me.
