And to make them slightly less "militaristic" perhaps? Roddenberry was rumored to have not been a fan of those uniforms, IIRC...^ I'm a big uni buff. I love those TWOK style unis. I hate the redresses they did of them in TNG to represent historic scenes - removing the undershirt, belt, etc.
The crimson jackets are awesome. And I love how with the double breast, they can loosen up the chest flap and have the undershirt showing along with the interior of the jacket.
I like the First Contact era unis too, but they look so dark and austere compared to the TWOK units.
I hated when they removed those collars for the TNG times they used it. What was the purpose for that???
