2-3-4-5-6 Unies

^ I'm a big uni buff. I love those TWOK style unis. I hate the redresses they did of them in TNG to represent historic scenes - removing the undershirt, belt, etc.

The crimson jackets are awesome. And I love how with the double breast, they can loosen up the chest flap and have the undershirt showing along with the interior of the jacket.

I like the First Contact era unis too, but they look so dark and austere compared to the TWOK units.

I hated when they removed those collars for the TNG times they used it. What was the purpose for that???

Rob

To show an evolution of the uniform.
And to make them slightly less "militaristic" perhaps? Roddenberry was rumored to have not been a fan of those uniforms, IIRC...

The purpose of removing the undershirt from the monster maroon was to tie it in to the evolution design of the TNG unitard. In "Tapestry" when Picard is a cadet the ribbed collar turtleneck is replaced by a simple division t-shirt. In "Yesterday's Enterprise" they have lost the t-shirt. This leads directly to the lower neck line of the TNG unitard in seasons 1 and 2.

I do not like the black and grey TNGera movie uniforms. I prefer the TNG season 3 and DS9 uniforms. I fail to understand why we have to wash all the color out of movies these days. We have developed monitors that produce more colors than we have ever been able to and practically EVERY movie now washes the color out and drapes the characters in dark clothing. WTF? I know some of this to convey mood. Some of this to hide CGI. Some of this is central to story like in the Matrix when they are in the Matrix. Honestly, I think most of it now is a substitute for quality of story or acting. It's just lazy.

As to the daily use of the monster maroon....

Several fan productions, Phase II - Of Of Gods and Men - Tales of the Seventh Fleet, have developed variations on the two different black vests worn by Kirk in WOK and GEN. There is also Scotty's bomber jacket from SFS and his utility vest from VH, FF, and "Relics". I suspect that the monster maroon jacket would not be required all the time, but that's just speculation on my part.
