16 year-old builds his own home.

Informing yourself about the substances you wanna use . . .
Not to be anal about it, but I think "materials" would be a better word. "Using substances" has a completely different connotation these days. ;)

Anyway, my hat's off to that kid. When I was his age, I was building model spaceships and jerking off a lot.

Oh, I love home renovations. I planned the interior of my apartment, shopped personally for furniture and accessories, and made sure everything was up to my tastes (and everything on a budget, I am proud to say). I can't just build anything myself: I pay people to do it for me. Sometimes, in nature. :D

See when I hear "home renovations," I think of actual building and construction type things. Furniture and accessories seems much more decorating to me. Which I love to do. My soon to be brother-in-law just asked for some help decorating their new office, which could be something fun and different.

But the kind of renovations I was talking about were things like taking out a wall, moving kitchen cabinets, replacing counters, flooring, etc. I'd love to renovate a house with my husband but after our first home-ownership experience, I don't know if we'll ever own a home again.

That's what I meant. When we renovated our recently-bought apartment, we rebuilt the bathroom from scratch, removed a wall, changed all flooring and tyling. Furnitures and accessories were only on top of that. (On the other hand, I would usually buy them just when I am making full renovations: I am a creature of habit, and I don't like to change my living space configuration too often). I guess the difference is that, obviously, apartments are much smaller and thus less flexible than a house.

I don't know that project or you or your husband, so please don't take this the wrong way:

Disclaimer over; here comes the post:

A lot of young couples buy a cheap'ish fixer-upper and work on it for a couple of years. In Denmark it's known as a divorce house as many of these couples find themselves in divorce proceedings as soon as the project is done and they have to find other ways of being together (it's happened twice to my sister  ).
