14 year old lives for 118 days with a void where her heart should be

Re: 14 year old lives for 118 days with a void where her heart should

Well she couldn't exactly grumble if somebody called her heartless. ;)

Re: 14 year old lives for 118 days with a void where her heart should

My heart went ou-- uhhh, I mean, I felt very sorry for her.

Seriously now, I did feel sorry for her- she really was scared having to be on that machine for so long. I think if I'd been in her position and that age I would have been terrified too.

So they can do that now. Medicine marches on. The leaps and bounds it's made over the last ten years are pretty amazing. In 7-10 years, they'll have a machine that replaces that one that can fit in the chest cavity, and be permanent if necessary. By 2025, a vastly lengthened lifespan (i'll need it by then!).

What a heartening story. :)

It is amazing what medical science can do, and it is rather amazing that the heart machine held out without fail for that entire time.

Re: 14 year old lives for 118 days with a void where her heart should

This is absolutely fantastic. They really have made amazing progress with artificial hearts in the past few years. And it probably won't be long before they have a permanent artificial replacement. :)

... lives for 118 days with a void where her heart should

How come no-one's made a joke in the "heartless for an entire lifetime/politician" genre yet?

You people disgust me. :D

Re: 14 year old lives for 118 days with a void where her heart should

I'm confused. Aren't people put on heart-bypass machines all of the time?

Re: 14 year old lives for 118 days with a void where her heart should

Only in operations for hours, not for 114 days straight.

Actually you are not supposed to be on bypass for more then 3 hours. After that the blood starts to breakdown. I know my last open-heart was about 1-2 minutes shy of that limit. Bleeding issues.
