How many times has "Absolutely Fabulous" gone and returned? Personally I'd miss it if it took a year or two off, but I'd imagine we'd get something very fresh and exciting when it returned again.
Besides, it's a huge Cash Cow for the BBC. I imagine it will continue in one form or another, with the odd break or two, for a long time hopefully.

Yea, Ab Fab was definitely one I was thinking of.
Don't get me wrong, I'd hate a skipped year or two, but, it wouldn't surprise me if it happens again some time
You could also throw Jonathan Creek into the mix, which has just returned as a three episode series, which is actually quite a lot considering all we've had for years is one annual special if we were lucky.

What bugs me is Capaldi is Doctor #12 when really he should be #13. After TDOD, John Hurt is considered to be the Doctor at the end by Tennant and Smith's incarnations. Now Tennant wont remember that, but we know that 11 does remember those events going forward. So now if he thinks of Hurt as the Doctor (which previous he didn't) than Capaldi should be Doctor #13 (not just his incarnation) and not Doctor #12.
That's something that will be argued over endlessly for as long as Doctor Who fandom lasts. But I think Capaldi's Doctor will ultimately be touted as the Twelfth Doctor throughout his run, just as Smith's will be the Eleventh, Tennant's the Tenth, and so on. It won't stop the arguments, but I think that's how it will be pan out for the majority of folks in the end.
Personally, I love the Eleventh Doctor's naming of John Hurt's War Doctor as "Captain Grumpy."
Ultimately he is both.
From a production standpoint he is clearly Number 12.
Continuity wise he is Number 14, the doctor after his thirteenth regeneration and first of a new set of up to 12 Doctors.
In universe he will for simplicities sake also be counted as the Twelfth Doctor, because Captain Grumpy is mostly still not counted as a Doctor and Remnant stayed the same incarnation despite regenerating.
So unless someone is writing his biography he us for all intends and purposes the Twelfth Doctor.

But he will be 12. Although the Eleventh Doctor may have made peace with Captain Grumpy, he still acknowledges that he wasn't the Doctor during that time and that Tennant's incarnation was 10.
IMO, it's a case of the Doctor having lost two regenerations due to circumstances (one during the Time War, and another through self-admitted vanity):
There's no argument that the Doctor used up all twelve of his original regenerations, but it's still going to be case of Tennant being the Tenth and Smith being the Eleventh, with Hurt being relegated as the War Doctor (or Captain Grumpy).
He's the Doctor. It doesn't matter whether he's the twelfth or thirteenth as the Doctor doesn't generally refer to himself by a number; that's largely a fan construct.
