11' USS Enterprise to join NASM "Milestones of Flight"

I think I would find it inappropriate if say, Star Wars' miniatures of the Millennium Falcon or Death Star sat next to the Mercury 7, but the Enterprise's real and imagined history makes it a natural for the exhibit.

Ooh, them's fightin' words, in some circles...fortunately I don't move in those circles!

Just want to mention to everyone - I'm not trying to put forth an opinion myself here - like I said, I'm not sure which I'd like more. I'm looking forward to seeing the conservation work though!

I love it that the article says Star Trek spun off five other TV series. Nice to see the animated series get counted. (Although technically that was more a revival than a spinoff, since it featured the same characters, setting, and format.)

I'm glad it will get more recognition and hopefully a better restoration. On the other hand it was nice having some "alone time" with it in the gift shop...the main part of NASM seems to be a bit of a zoo to me.

It certainly is. And the exact placement is going to be important, too. She can't hang, so presumably she'll be at floor level, which is an advantage for getting close to her and getting good pictures. I've felt pretty up-close-and-personal with the Pershing II and Saber missiles that are at ground level in the Milestones Hall.

I think the curators will do right by her, though. They're aware of the attention the conservation is getting (not just from Shatner!), and they're keeping visitors informed. There was recently an open house at Udvar-Hazy, where the work is being done - they let visitors come watch the process for a day.

So while "alone time" might well be reduced, I think they're going to give her a place of pride, which the gift shop never was.
