As a film fan?

I am not a film buff and never really get to see movies in the theater too much. I was hoping to get into movies more in the near future and maybe write about them. I know critics and bloggers and fans here see a lot of movies.
So I was wondering what would your list look like? Maybe top 5 per genre. Do you agree with the lists I linked? Do you have to see like every movie to be able to talk about them?
I am thinking movies that have historical significance, movies that are a virtual course in film making & movies that have a timeless quality. I know this sort of thing is subjective cause there were movies I loved growing up people hated and movies people loved I hated.
As for the 2 links the top 20 are quite varied as are the lists as a whole. Are listed as "top" movies.
