10 Questions concerning The Voyage Home

Well 12 if you get literal. They are just some general questions that were brought up when we were drinking beer and watching the movie.

1.Did they wear the same clothes the whole time during their "Vulcan exile"?

2.Was Gillian easy? Shes throwing them out of the Aquarium one minute, and the next shes having a Michelob with Kirk.

3.How far did Kirk swim after opening the bay doors? I think I've asked that one before on a different thread.

4.Was it widely known that one could slingshot around the sun to travel thru time, or was it classified information that they knew because of who they were?

5.Why couldn't Spock discuss the subject of death with McCoy without a common frame of reference? He couldn't give any description of any kind?

6.Is it ironic that Sulu is from San Fran and Takei is gay?

7.What was the deal with Madeline?

8.What type of probe would be sent to destroy the very home of the species the were trying to contact? They state the probes hail or energy was ionizing the atmosphere.

9.What are some things Sulu said or did in order to use that helicopter?

10.Uhura and Chekov are at the Enterprise. Scotty, Sulu, and McCoy are getting plexiglass. Who beams aboard Spock when Kirk and Gillian drop him off? Was it Maltz?

1.Did they wear the same clothes the whole time during their "Vulcan exile"?
P.U.
2.Was Gillian easy? Shes throwing them out of the Aquarium one minute, and the next shes having a Michelob with Kirk.
Did you forget that she knew they were up to something from Spock's past-tense extinction comment and that he knew Gracie was pregnant?
3.How far did Kirk swim after opening the bay doors? I think I've asked that one before on a different thread.
Slightly down, off to one side and up. Maybe a few dozen yards horizontally.
4.Was it widely known that one could slingshot around the sun to travel thru time, or was it classified information that they knew because of who they were?
They knew because they were the ones who figured it out in the first place in "Tomorrow is Yesterday". But Kirk blabs about time travel when he calls Starfleet, so it can't be THAT secret.
5.Why couldn't Spock discuss the subject of death with McCoy without a common frame of reference? He couldn't give any description of any kind?
Because that wouldn't be funny. Besides, can you describe the color violet to a person who was born blind?
6.Is it ironic that Sulu is from San Fran and Takei is gay?
No.
7.What was the deal with Madeline?
She was the smallest of twelve young girls in a Paris boarding school, who was faced with an attack of appendicitis.
8.What type of probe would be sent to destroy the very home of the species the were trying to contact? They state the probes hail or energy was ionizing the atmosphere.
One that either didn't realize the effects of its transmissions, or was designed by Microsoft.
9.What are some things Sulu said or did in order to use that helicopter?
Oy. Here come the tack-o-rama gay jokes...
10.Uhura and Chekov are at the Enterprise. Scotty, Sulu, and McCoy are getting plexiglass. Who beams aboard Spock when Kirk and Gillian drop him off? Was it Maltz?
Well, there's no way to know exactly how much time elapsed between Gillian picking up Kirk and Spock and droppign Spock off in Golden Gate Park, but sinc eI live in San Francisco I can tell you that to drive from the Marina Greenw here she picked them up to the farthest away point in GG Park takes about 15-20 minutes. Since the scene at Plexicorp takes place after Gillian picks up Kirk and Spock, it's unlikely Scotty and McCoy got back to the ship before Spock. So...a wizard did it.

1. Yes

2. Yes

3. Not terribly far.

4. Everyone knew who cared, it was just very tricky.

5. Spock had forgotten that McCoy was dead once too.

6. No.

7. What's the deal with you?

8. The kind of probe that was pissed off that it couldn't find what it was looking for.

9. Don't ask, don't tell.

10. I'm not sure about this one...I want to say Scotty was back by then, but I'm probably wrong.

10.Uhura and Chekov are at the Enterprise. Scotty, Sulu, and McCoy are getting plexiglass. Who beams aboard Spock when Kirk and Gillian drop him off? Was it Maltz?
10. The Klingon ship had an automated transporter system. Spock simply requested that he be beamed aboard and the ship's computer did the work. Problem Solved!

1.Did they wear the same clothes the whole time during their "Vulcan exile"?

Ever hear of washing machines? We have them.

2.Was Gillian easy? Shes throwing them out of the Aquarium one minute, and the next shes having a Michelob with Kirk.

Hey, Gillian's cool. She loves pizza!

3.How far did Kirk swim after opening the bay doors? I think I've asked that one before on a different thread.

According to Shatner, he did the stunt himself.

4.Was it widely known that one could slingshot around the sun to travel thru time, or was it classified information that they knew because of who they were?

They did it before in the Classic Series

5.Why couldn't Spock discuss the subject of death with McCoy without a common frame of reference? He couldn't give any description of any kind?

Spock was tired.

6.Is it ironic that Sulu is from San Fran and Takei is gay?

Sulu's ancestor was on Queer Guy for the Straight Guy

7.What was the deal with Madeline?

She was Dr. Nichols therapist

8.What type of probe would be sent to destroy the very home of the species the were trying to contact? They state the probes hail or energy was ionizing the atmosphere.

They were aliens who live without atmostphere?

9.What are some things Sulu said or did in order to use that helicopter?

He probably made the pilot think that he knew him.

10.Uhura and Chekov are at the Enterprise. Scotty, Sulu, and McCoy are getting plexiglass. Who beams aboard Spock when Kirk and Gillian drop him off? Was it Maltz?

Maybe Spock used his communicator and activated the transporter remotley? I don't know if they could do this, though.

7.What was the deal with Madeline?

Dr Nichols had just come to the conclusion that there are actually moments in one's life where other things become more important than having one's hair done.

She was the smallest of twelve young girls in a Paris boarding school, who was faced with an attack of appendicitis.

Who latter grows up, moves to San Francisco and takes a job being the assistant to a schmuck who "invents" transparent aluminum. Oh, and she exchanges her blue school dress and yellow hat for a red smock.

Yes, but that goes without saying. ;)

Actually, I believe they first encountered/discovered it in "The Naked Time", but probably used it intentionally the first time in TIY.

"The Naked Time" didn't use a slingshot but rather what Spock describes as a theroretical relationship between time and antimatter. The time travel there was a by-product of the cold start of the warp engines and was orginally intended to lead into TiY. I'd say Geordi's configuration of the E-E's warp drive to replicate the Borg Sphere's time travel in FC is an application of the same effect as "Naked Time".

9. Takei, in an interview at the time (probably "Starlog") tells of running a full marathon one weekend, then going in to film a scene were he has to sprint to the helicopter, jump inside and take off -- in other words a scene was filmed of him stealing it. Because he was sore from the marathon, he had trouble doing the scene, and someone crouched below the frame and actually helped boost him into the chopper.

The scene didn't look very good, so it was dropped from the final film. So, no talk with the pilot, he just "borrowed" it.

Well I think that...

NOT NOW MADELINE!!!

1.Did they wear the same clothes the whole time during their "Vulcan exile"?

I'm sure Vulcan has washing machines and clothing replicators/stores.

2.Was Gillian easy? Shes throwing them out of the Aquarium one minute, and the next shes having a Michelob with Kirk.

She suspected something was "up" with Kirk and more than likely just fell for his natural "charm."

3.How far did Kirk swim after opening the bay doors? I think I've asked that one before on a different thread.

About a lungfull.

4.Was it widely known that one could slingshot around the sun to travel thru time, or was it classified information that they knew because of who they were?

TOS would suggest it was a reguarly used procedure. It's likely it's a highly risky procedure all SF captains and engineers know about and will use in an extreme circumstance.

5.Why couldn't Spock discuss the subject of death with McCoy without a common frame of reference? He couldn't give any description of any kind?

Because the subject of death has no common frame of reference and defies easy description. It'd be like trying to explain to your dog what it's like having an imagination.

6.Is it ironic that Sulu is from San Fran and Takei is gay?

7.What was the deal with Madeline?

She's gay.

8.What type of probe would be sent to destroy the very home of the species the were trying to contact? They state the probes hail or energy was ionizing the atmosphere.

It's gay.

Ok... I think even Spock said that it's unlikely the probe meant any harm and realized what it was doing was causing harm.

9.What are some things Sulu said or did in order to use that helicopter?

Well, since he's from San Francisco...

A scripted scene was to have him stealing it. With information given in the movie I just assume that as part of the deal with the Transparent Alluminum formula McCoy and Scotty 'bought" the plexglass they needed and procured the use of the huey.

10.Uhura and Chekov are at the Enterprise. Scotty, Sulu, and McCoy are getting plexiglass. Who beams aboard Spock when Kirk and Gillian drop him off? Was it Maltz?

Isn't there a scene with him talking with someone (Scotty?) when he gets beamed aboard? Been a while since I've seen it so I don't remember. If not they could've had an auto transport macro set-up that was activated by a pre-set set of lifesigns walking within a certain perimeter of the BoP or Spock had his auto-transport key-fob with him.

Sweet!

^^^Well, under the circumstances. . . Let's change it to something I could do. If I'm a time traveler who knows Earth will be destroyed unless I can get this load of aluminum siding to my ship and I can't borrow a truck or rent a truck to get it there, I would probably "temporarily borrow" (STEAL!) your truck, and use it, but would leave a note or call the police just before we took off telling them where it was. I'd try to leave you with a full tank of gas and maybe have the engineer on my ship give it a good tune-up, but....

Sulu, in desperation, would probably steal the chopper. At the very least, even if the other pilot gave permission, Sulu's still breaking all sorts of laws. No 1986/U.S. license, no flight plan, hovering over a community park, etc.

4. It was known but the problem is that if you don't preform it correctly you could launch yourself into the sun. That would be a bummer.

5. You'll undersatnd when you're dead. : P

Seeing other people dying still isn't the same as having experienced it himself. Spock's experience really was that unique. I guess about the only person he could chat up about the experience is Jesus. :p

Spock has died, Spock has risen, Spock will come again.

Well hasn't Scotty died too? Shouldn't McCoy know about the experience anyhow? He was carrying Spock's soul and that soul was dictating his actions in TSFS, telling Kirk to climb the steps and trying to charter a ship.
IMO I don't think Spock every really "crossed-over". McCoy and Spock shared the experience, he should at least be able to talk about something.
