Ok, what with the family being only Melakon and his cat that's kindof logical, I suppose. Still, I think something needs to be done. I say we all gang up and adopt Mel as a brother-in-Trek! Who's in?

just calling me Rhubarb will suffice, thanks :) I don't walk on water these days. One gets into serious trouble with the authorities in Jerusalem for trying. :D

You should adopt someone unlikeable so you won't be able to give such an unhappy answer. Even an annoyingly bland or hideous pet rock would qualify.

What's a "first" cousin

A "first cousin" (at least in the American reckoning--not so sure about British) is the child of your parent's sibling, but not they're children. So, my cousin Brenda is the daughter of my Uncle Rick, who is my dad's oldest brother. This makes Brenda my "first cousin." But her daughters, Britney and Brandy, are my second cousins, because they are the second generation away from my Uncle Rick. By the same token, I am Brenda's first cousin but my son is her second cousin.

Hope that helps!

Hate to correct you but Brenda's daughters are your first cousin once removed. Your child and Brenda's children are second cousins.

I give an explanation of the various forms of cousins in this post.

^ Here's an even bigger version

1) how many siblings do you have?

2

2) Are your grandparents still

Alive? No.

3) Are your parents still alive?

Yes

4) Do you have any children?

No

5) Do you have any grandchildren?

I would hope not.

6) How many first cousins do you have?

Let's see: 5 (from my Mom's brother) + 3 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 2 (on my dad's side) = 15. I think that's right.

7) Who is the oldest person in your family?

Probably my Great Aunt, who is 90 or so.

8) Who is the youngest person in your family?

One of my cousins has a son who is 1 or 2 now, so I think it's him.

9) Who is the tallest person in your family?

My grandfather was six foot, but he's no longer with us. I think one of my Uncles is about that height, maybe slightly shorter. If none of them, then my dad, who is 5'10.

10) Which family member do you like the least?

I'm going to go with my the older of the two Aunts on my father's side. Nothing personal against her, but she seems to avoid staying in touch, so I don't know her very well. One of her daughters also was in Siena, Italy the exact same time I was in Siena and never responded to my message about meeting up, which was annoying.

I don't know why, but it's the cousins question (particularly with how many Aunts and Uncles listed) that interests me the most.

Well, if I liked the cat the least, it wouldn't make any sense to have it. I'm stuck with me, for better or worse.

ETA: I used to have a brother-in-law nobody liked, if that counts. Even my other brother-in-law thought he was a jackass.

1) how many siblings do you have?

Two. An older brother and an older sister.

2) Are your grandparents still alive?

One grandfather is still alive. One passed away before I was born, and the other two passed away when I was a kid.

Of my "adopted" grandparents, one is still alive.

3) Are your parents still alive?

Yes, thankfully.

4) Do you have any children?

Nope.

5) Do you have any grandchildren?

Nope.

6) How many first cousins do you have?

Five. I used to have another but she passed away when I was a teenager.

7) Who is the oldest person in your family?

My grandfather.

8) Who is the youngest person in your family?

In my immediate family it is me. In my extended family, one of my younger cousins.

9) Who is the tallest person in your family?

No clue. We are all short people!

10) Which family member do you like the least?

I don't like to think like that.

Thank you! That is a very helpful explanation. However (and I may well be quite wrong about this) but I understand what you wrote is the British version of this. In America, I'm pretty sure it's how I said. I believe this is important for purposes of laws against incest. So, I couldn't marry my first cousin, but her daughters being my second cousins mean I could marry one of them (provided any of us would be interested in that... frankly, I'd be very uncomfortable even with that close of a relation...)

I think the relationship terms are the same in America and in Britain/Europe/Australia. In fact, according to the chart that i like to below, more than half of US states ban first cousin marriages, and among these four also ban marriages between first cousins once removed marriages which to me suggests that that term is used in the same way in the US as in Britain.

Wouldn't Britney and Brandy be your first cousins once removed? And if you have children, *those* would be their second cousins. That's what I always assumed, anyway.

If this is not true, then I guess I have no idea what "once removed" means...
