10,000 Survivors? !

[

My only question: Isn't there an episode in which Spock's father and mother come for a visit? That's the only confusing part.

"Journey to Babel." Which is clearly not going to happen in this new timeline.

Or at least happen differently . . . . .

Spock's mom was in Star Trek IV, she talked to him before he left to return to Earth.

I don't think they should go back on destroying Vulcan. It's gone and it was a huge shock! To erase that in the next movie by saving it would be to lessen the shock factor. It cheapens it, and then it basically becomes the filmmakers didn't have the balls to carry through on the big risks that they took in this movie. That's what got Star Trek in trouble in the 90s; the writers and producers played things safe. If JJ Abrams and company are really interested in making Star Trek fresh, new and exciting, they should not play it safe and should keep taking risks.

The novels haven't gotten that far down the Trek time line when the movie claimed Romulas went bye-bye.
Star Trek Online takes place (willn't have been place taken*) then. But "The Path to 2409" (the little mini-series of chronology entries that they're doing leading up to the game) hasn't gotten to that point yet.

*Extra points if you recognise this reference. :D

The Trek Online timeline has reached 2387

The Path to 2409: 2387:
On Stardate 64444.5, the IRW Valdore reports unusual stellar activity, including a disturbance equivalent to a force seven ion storm. Romulus loses contact with Donatra's ship, and dispatches four D'deridex class warbirds to search for the Valdore.

The Romulan Senate finally authorizes an evacuation order, and ships are recalled to help ferry Romulus residents off-world. Military estimates are that it will take a minimum of six weeks to evacuate the homeworld.

Twenty-seven hours later, the Hobus star goes supernova. The resulting chain reaction destroys Romulus and Remus. Billions of Romulans are killed.

Starfleet immediately orders all available ships to cross the Neutral Zone and assist the Romulans with any possible relief and recovery efforts. Several of these ships are attacked by Nero, who is captaining the Narada, a heavily modified Romulan vessel. Additional cruisers are diverted to escort relief vessels to Romulan space.

Intercepted Romulan transmissions indicate that Praetor Chulan and the leaders of the Senate escaped Romulus before the planet's destruction. But the USS Nobel, en route to Romulus, find the bodies of Chulan and the Senate's ruling council floating in space near their derelict shuttle.

After Nero expands his attacks to Klingon ships, Chancellor Martok orders a fleet to enter Romulan space. He appoints his friend Worf as one of the mission's commanders, giving him the rank of General for the mission.

Meanwhile, Geordi La Forge brings the Jellyfish to Vulcan and agrees to allow Spock to pilot it to the Hobus system.

According to sensor reports recorded on Stardate 64471.6 by the USS Enterprise-E, the Hobus supernova was contained by a limited singularity, ending the threat to the quadrant. Starfleet believes that both the Jellyfish and the Narada were lost.

Vulcan is gone, people need to get over this. NO reset this time, finally.

But not really, since it exists in another reality ;)

It's hard to get over it. Vulcan and Vulcans are a huge reason why I loved Star Trek. To add insult to injury (for me,) no matter which timeline is used, a race I love goes bye-bye.

**throws darts at Kurtzman and Orci again** :D

Did T'Pau get a mention? I was just re-watching Amok Time, and she was a legend of Vulcan - I'd have thought she'd be among the people who would be saved by nuSpock.

I wonder if Tuvok, Saavik and Valeris are alive...

Tuvok was born on Vulcanis in 2264 in the original timeline, so he has a fighting chance of being born in the new one.

Saavik is morbidly obese.

If Spock knows there are millions of other Vulcans scattered on other colonies, the "endangered species" comment seems to be a bit of an exaggeration, but he was quite understandably grief stricken, so I think he can be forgiven for embellishing. ;) It does make sense to me that there would be more than 10,000 Vulcans, and that 10,000 number pertains to the number that were able to evacuate Vulcan, which would make sense considering how short of a time they had, so I'm hoping that's the way future movies/novels are going to treat it.

One of the Vulcans Spock rescued was an elderly Vulcan woman that reminded me of T'Pau when I saw her (but the scene went by fast, so I could be mistaken). I hope it is her because she's such a kick ass character, and it'd make sense for her to be in that group Spock saved.

The destruction of Vulcan will bring into sharp focus for everyone in the Vulcanoid cultures Spock's long time quest for reunification. His role would be more important than ever. Important enough, in fact, that if Nimoy becomes too old for work, they will have to cast somebody else.

Or Spock Prime could actually die of old age. People do sometimes do that, even when they're Ambassadors, I'm told. His movement may well appear in later films/shows in the nuTrek universe, however. It is an Undiscovered Country type story waiting to happen, so I wouldn't even be particularly surprised.

Not sure how old Spock would be at this point, but Vulcans work until they die or are too sick to work, from what I've seen. It could be a while. Spock does have his human-half lack of longevity into the mix.

Well he's already well over 130 by the time he arrives back in the 23rd Century - he gives the date of Romulus' demise as '129 years from now' iirc. And that's not including how old he is at this point - at a guess Prime Spock is probably ~160-170. Having said that, Tuvok is 112 at the end of Voyager's run, and still apparently in the prime of life.

I wonder what Romulus's relationship with this new colony will be. I mean, in Prime Continuity, the Romulans were always trying to "retake" Vulcan. Wouldn't a colony be easier pickings? But, since it isn't actually Vulcan, would the Romulans care to "retake" it? Or, will this event spawn such sympathy for the remaining Vulcans in the Romulan Empire that it brings them closer, and results in the Romulans joining the Federation?!

Those who have said so are right - this was masterful on Abrams' part.

there's a lot of difference between... "we're going to retake the birth planet of our origin" and "we're going to occupy a colony planet by military force" they wouldn't have reason romulan's are not logical their emotional.... there's more of a emotional attachment to the plane of your origin then any other in the universe.

couple of questions....

didn't Savak have more then one wife and wasn't wife number 2 in move VI....

and

what was that vulcan soul that spock prime transfered to mccoy in Kahn... Katra... ??? ... don't they save those somehow....
now they are going to have two spock souls... or katras or whatever it's called...

Assuming the Romulans have always wanted to "take back" their planet of origin, I'd think even they would be impacted by the destruction of Vulcan.

And even more wonderful storylines open up. :D

There might be other Vulcanoid cultures besides Romulans and Remans, as well. Not canon (but very popular) "Yesterday's Son" posited that Zarabeth (TOS: All Our Yesterdays) was able to bear a child by Spock in that frozen wasteland without geneticists' assitance, because her species was related to Vulcans.
