1/350 scale Project: Endurance

My next scratch-build project is about to begin construction following several months of 3D concept work in SketchUp. Conceived as a expedition cruiser during the early TMP-era, it is a large vessel with extensive hangar facilities for scientific and deep-planetary exploration. At 1/350 scale, this model will measure 48" in length. I've attached a few rough renders of the concept at this stage. Thanks for looking!









 
I'm absolutely digging that halfway TOS-TMP nacelle. Less of a fan of the double neck, but that's mainly because of the way it curves over the saucer, giving almost a hunched look. It does give a kind-of design family resemblance to the Repulse and I can only applaud that. It's size does strike me more of a carrier than an exploratory design though. How big is it when compared to a Constitution?

Out of curiousity... how does moving the nacelles to a traditional position impact the overall silhouette?

I don't have a direct side-by-side with a Constitution although I do have one with Hood, which is only slightly shorter.



I suppose moving the nacelles to a 'traditional position" means placing them higher and above the primary as on the Enterprise TOS/Refit. I could only imagine that it would make it look... traditional. Less compact, less sleek and less unique.
 
Oooph. I think I'd like it better being about the same size, give or take 10%. That's too big, in my not-so-humble opinion.
 
Looks like a ship that falls design-wise somewhere between Excelsior and Enterprise-C, which seems appropriate. If the engines were shifted further back, there'd be a major similarity. It looks like another step in the design evolution, as it should.

I love the nacelles! They remind me of the fuselage of a fighter ... maybe the old F4 Phantom. And I can't wait to see the inside of that shuttle bay. You are going to have a doors-open version, aren't you?

This looks bigger than your previous efforts -- do you foresee any challenges with the armature? I assume you're going to need a heavier one. Do you have any special lighting effects planned?

Yes, I do plan on open bay doors for both the primary and secondary hangars. The armature design was originally going to be water-jet cut from sheet brass but a combination of laser-cut acrylic and brass tubing will most likely be the system. No special lighting other than the usual nav, strobe, bussard, fiber optic and self-illumination spots. Some interiors will be depicted on backlit slide film through larger ports.
 
Looking Amazing! As with all your models, there are so many great details - I love the pointed keel and the unusual bevelled edge to the saucer, plus the compressed diamond-shaped deflector dish.
 
That's incredible. Also really interested in seeing a bridge layout! Have you designed any specs for her yet?

Also, what's the class of the smaller ship in the OP?

No, I haven't done a bridge layout or worked up the overall specs just yet but that might be soon.

The ship alongside Endurance is the Repulse-class heavy destroyer I designed a few years ago and built as 1/350 model as well. I also have a thread here on that design.
 
Looks like the Repulse could dock onto the downside of the twin necks if there were retractable docking clamps and turbo lifts.

Could be useful to have two ships on extended missions.
 
Wow, that's interesting! I really like the double neck and interesting shape of the secondary hull, especially. Have you ever thought about calling it the Endurant?
