1/350 REFIT BUILD...

Chris PikE

Commander
Red Shirt
My 1/350 Refit Build.
The First Picture is of the ship in space. It's a composite of the model in front of a star field.
The second Picture is the raw set up and how the photo started. The two layer black cloth has glitter attached to it, although somewhat hard to see in the photograph.

^^ They had troubles with the real model as well, it was so opalescent and reflective (in all possible colours) that they had to tone the lighting way down to be able to shoot her for TMP else it kept bleeding light at the edges, so I understand that you had a few problems with it, but it looks good.

So, what did you do with the sprue?
There was a hoop shaped bit around the saucer IIRC...maybe good for a Unicron ring or something?

Yeah I often played with boxes and rafts more than the toy in it

Beautiful job with this kit, and your composting setup worked out really well! Seeing these type of model shots is really inspiring, I can only imagine how much fun that must be :) Those youtube video clips are great! In an odd way, its kinda cool to see you struggled wit h the blue/green screen keying sequences in the same manner that Doug Trumball (and later ILM) did. IIRC Trumball kinda solved this by turning down the light intensity (which kinda sucked as a solution but...) and also filmed against a black background. I think the keying was done through luminosity alone.

The camera moves are really smooth too, did you use a motorized track for these shots? Id be curious to know more about your setup.

Everything looks really good on this, and my only suggestion would be to do another round of shots but changing your aperture size to reduce the dof, its a bit soft in places. can I ask what type of camera you are using? Ive found that variable zooms never get really sharp, I stick to primes for detail stuff.

Also, the ship lights are bleeding pretty strong... can their intensity be controlled by varying the voltage? Id have alot of fun just creating the right mix of exposure and light intensities to get it a bit more balanced and sharper shot.

But man, other than that really amazing work, I'm already excited to see what you do next!

Many thanks for the kind words!

Yes indeed, this particular model is a challenge to film...to get right! I'll be posting more with the corrections you suggested hopefully to nail the feel and movement of the original...Those spotlights are just that!!!...spotlights! In the next videos they will be realistically toned down...More to come and thanks again!!

Ah man bummer thats really going to limit your options. A used DSLR and a prime lense would go great with your track and give you the control you need :)

That model looks awesome.. said it a few times already, also your pearlescent paintjob is so very good.
Maybe we can get Andrew Probert in here, he would love it. :D

It used to be possible to summon him...:shifty:

Probert!
Probert!!
Probert!!!

The Paul Olsen / TrekModeler methods of using those iridescent paints produces an amazing result, I can see why everyones jaw dropped when they saw the TMP model in person with some nice lighting. Its a travesty what ILM did to the prop for TWOK+.
