Hey folks it's that time of year again and no writers' strike to frak things up. No, that's the networks' job, trotting out yet more depressingly mundane series ideas. How many cops & lawyers & doctors shows does the universe need? The number is apparently infinite! :p

Trying to stay positive, there are a few intriguing little nuggets in the compost heap...
NBC has handed a pilot order to "Day One," a futuristic drama from "Heroes" writer-producer Jesse Alexander.

The project, produced by Universal Media Studios, chronicles the aftermath of a global event that devastates the world's infrastructures when a small band of survivors strive to rebuild society and unravel the mysteries of why the event took place and what the future has in store.
Couldn't just resurrect Jericho, huh?

ABC is headed for "Happy Town."

The network has greenlighted a two-hour pilot from the project, written by "October Road" creators Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec and Scott Rosenberg.

In the vein of ABC's cult drama "Twin Peaks," "Happy Town" is a mystery set in the hamlet of Happy Town, which had enjoyed a seven-year peace after a series of kidnappings until it is hit by another crime.
Stealth sci fi, a la Lost?

"The Station," a single-camera pilot from 20th and Ben Stiller's Red Hour Films, revolves around a covert CIA operative and his workmates who are embedded in a South American banana republic with a mission to install a new dictator.
Could be good, if the comedy is as inky black as I hope.
"Flash Forward," from David S. Goyer, Brannon Braga and ABC Studios, is based on Robert J. Sawyer's sci-fi novel and chronicles the chaos that ensues after everyone in the world blacks out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds and has a mysterious vision of the future that changes lives forever.
One more chance to bash Braga? :D How can we resist!

And of course there's the V remake and Caprica.

Scorsese "slums" with TV series about the early days of Atlantic City.

...Martin Scorsese's HBO pilot "Boardwalk Empire"...based on Nelson Johnson's book about the early 20th century origins of Atlantic City, N.J....written by Terrence Winter and to be directed by Scorsese, centers on Nucky Johnson (Steve Buscemi), who runs a liquor distribution ring at the onset of Prohibition, and Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt), a ruthless World War I veteran and a low-level flunky for Nucky.

Scorsese doing television? I guess he bought into the "it's not TV, it's HBO" schtick. Regardless, that should be interesting.

Flash Forward has promise, although I'm not optimistic about its chances.

Caprica will be worth a look, but I'm not pumped up about any sort of Battlestar Galactica past this last crop of episodes.

I'm at least curious about "Day One". I read somewhere that ABC has ordered a pilot starring Lauren Graham, which I would watch simply because I am in love with her. Not interested in "Flash Forward". I don't think "Caprica" should be a series at all (a TV-movie or miniseries, at best). And why the hell do people keep trying to adapt "Absolutely Fabulous" for the US? It's a project that keeps popping up every few years but never gets off the ground.

I actually think ALL of those sound interesting.

Day One - Agree that it sounds very Jericho-esque.....

Happy Town - Will draw the obvious Twin Peaks comparisons. Bad news considering that it's highly unlikely to be as good.

The Station - Sounds a bit like a mission that 'The Unit' might carry out.

Flash Forward - Even with Braga attached I'm willing to give this one a chance.

Add these to Virtuality, and Revolution (is this even going to air?) and things are looking promising. Hopefully some of these at least will make it to series next year.

Pretty bleak sounding. The HBO Boardwalk show will probably be good, but for the sci-fi nut in me, I'm worried.

BSG ends in a couple of months. Lost has one more season after this one. The new Stargate will suck. I don't have much hope for Caprica. Just what the hell am I going to watch?

Maybe Day One would be interesting. I watched like two episodes of Jericho, and plain didn't like it. The post apocalypse setting always intrigues me though, and I rather enjoyed Jeremiah from that egotistical twat JMS.

The lack of sci-fi, and the fact that 'canon' comic books have sprung up for Farscape, Angel, and Buffy makes me wonder if sci-fi TV is dead. God do I hate comic books as a format.

Why did I think this was being made into a film?

It sounds like about ten "high concept" sci fi movies being made this year. And every year. :rommie:

I enjoyed Flash Forward the novel so I'll give it a chance. Day One looks interesting and I was a fan of Jericho as well and in love with Lauren Graham. Is this her first post-Gilmore Girls TV project? Station seems interesting.

I too enjoyed the novel Flash Forward. Basing a scifi TV show on actual SF instead of remaking old TV shows or movies is too novel for some minds to grasp. Plus, cheap shots at Braga are irresistible. As of now, it's the best bet for decent SF on TV.

Maybe this won't be as bad as The Last Templar?
