To be fair, the same filmmaker (George Sluizer) made both versions...And, I might add, the original versions of both films basically had each other's endings.

Not only did the original version of Spoorloos have an upbeat ending just like The Vanishing ultimately would, The Vanishing was to have a *dark* ending as well! Sluizer was told American audiences wouldn't like the dark ending and so he rewrote his remake as well.

Not as simple as the old "American remakes always suck" cliché, huh?
