“Jean-Luc Picard is back”: will new Picard show eclipse Discovery?

He’s been lobbing it since mid TNG.

The episode Captain’s Holiday I think was meant to be an attempt at it, same with Starship Mine.

Captain's Holiday started as a good idea. Ira Steven Behr wanted it to be sort of about the existential dread Picard feels about growing older, and the loneliness of being a captain. But Roddenberry wanted it changed into something really pervy. Stewart much preferred this to Behr's idea.

Why does it matter if this new show for Stewart "eclipse" "Discovery"? Why does it matter? Do many of you want this new show to eclipse "Discovery", so that you can claim that it's better? Why? Why not view it as an attempt by CBS All Access to rebuild the Trek television franchise . . . and nothing more?

I don't understand the point of emphasizing the name of the show.

I get the quotation marks, not the emphasizing.

Because that would be too positive. After all, we cannot have two shows co-exists. We had to figure out who was the best captain, Kirk or Picard! We had determine who was smarter and on and on.

It's a sad fact that humans cannot help but compare.

Because for some (myself included ;)) - there can be only ONE "TRUE/BEST" version of Star Trek (And for me - that IS "Star Trek" the original series..YMMV) again ;)

The funny thing to me is - a lot of ST: D detractors decry the use of the Spock and Sarek characters in the series, as well as the new Burnham's character's ties to them...and claim ST: D is relying too much on existing characters and lore...Star Trek always needs to be new/original...

YET - some of those same people hear "New show about Captain Picard..."

And many are all:

"Great this is EXACTLY what Star Trek should be...I can't wait for Riker, Data, Worf, Troi..et al to make an appearance on it; and I bet we'll get flashbacks of Picard in the Enterprise too! Yay! So much better than ST: D...."
^^^
Before a single script is written, promo shown...and then there's the other thing that they seem to love with regard to said Picard show, but dislike about ST: D. :wtf::whistle:

It amuses me to know end the constant demand for Star Trek to tell new and invigorating stories while still holding on to familiar characters or ships. As much as I hear that Discovery is criticized for its reimagined tech, I believe the criticism is far more for its daring to be different (cue the defenders) with the uniforms, with the starships and with the Klingons. It offered too much change and it certainly was not acceptable!!!!!

So much so, that the production team ran back to some more familiar elements (Pike, the Enterprise, Spock, colored uniforms), doubling down on the nostalgia. What will happen with Season 2 is complaints that Season 2 is playing it too safe and should take more chances.

In other words, production teams cannot win.

They should pay less attention to the fans and more to their audience. Most viewers want to be entertained, they don't care if it's coherent with a fifty-year-old show.

Chances are . . . I will probably be among those complaining about the series playing it too safe during Season 2. Although, I think some will continue to complain about the series, because its lead is an African-American actress.

To be honest, it's a different approach:
I like to see familiar characters, in new situations and adventures.

What DIS so far offered, was familiar characters and situation completely changed up, but only to tell overall very familiar and safe situations and stories.

I have nothing against Sarek and Spock showing up on 'Discovery'. The show was advertised as a prequel, and those were important characters at the time (both in- and out-of- universe), so it kinda' makes sense for them to show up. What I don't like is retroactively changing their backstory to add Burnham as a new sibling, and generally over-reliance on familiar concepts (Mirror universe, Klingon war), just to tell a very mundane story that conflicts with previous history of those exact concepts.

For the Picard show - they are essentially free to change the character as they like. It's a sequel. They won't run into contradictions with other shows if Picard has changed as an old man.

That being said: The excitement for the Picard show operates under the assumption that there will actually be new adventures and storylines to be told. If the Picard show is going to be about, say, stopping an Invasion of a Borg Cube, that then turns into the Borg travelling into the past to alter history, and Picard having to fight the Borg in the past to preserve the future (just this time to the 18th century, instead of the 21st), people are going to be disappointed. Rightly so.

It's just that a sequel has a lot more breathing room to change things up, whereas in a prequel, the expectations for setting and worldbuilding are pretty narrow, and every diversion there is going to be amplified by the knowledge of supplemental material.

He’s been lobbing it since mid TNG.

The episode Captain’s Holiday I think was meant to be an attempt at it, same with Starship Mine.

There's sometimes a difference between what a creator (actor, writer) likes to do with a character, and what's actually the best for the story and the character.

If I were Patrick Steward, I ABSOLUTELY would prefer punching badguys in the face and banging green space chicks! I really can understand him lobbying for that, and I don't blame him for trying! But as a viewer, I really only would like to see that as the exception, (and then notably highlighted as such - I really like "starship mine"). But as his "regular" modus operandi, I want to see Picard have tense debates and speeches (even though that's not as interesting for him as an actor to do), and relegate the action stuff to other characters.
