“Jean-Luc Picard is back”: will new Picard show eclipse Discovery?

I'd rather see President Gorgon the Friendly Angel than President Janeway.
Oh I don't know. If you saw Orange Is The New Black you would realize that Kate Mulgrew was really holding back on VOY. She is amazing there. If anyone besides else besides Picard get's a revival, I wouldn't mind more of Janeway (just not the rest of the Voyager crew)

It's not Mulgrew, it's the character of Janeway. Not a fan.

That would be a very bad crappy concept for a new Star Trek series!

A creative team that thinks it's a good idea to have spore-drives and giant space tardigrades is a creative team silly enough to build a show about an old guy in a nursing home babbling on about spore-drives and giant space tardigrades.

At any rate, it's heartwarming to see that the euphoria of the Picard announcement lasted all but a matter of hours before the usual cynicism resumed.

I'm laughing because with everything Mr. Stewart has said (including why he ultimately agreed to it, when at first he wasn't interested); the show WON'T be TNG 2.0 in the 25th century.

I have a feeling from what I've read it's probably going to be something along the lines of: "Jean Luc Picard: The Irumodic Syndrome years". The pilot will start with him tending grape vines in the Picard family Vineyards.

Am I right of thinking that number has dropped compared to what Star Trek was like in the 90s?

Trek hit its high point in 92 with around 11 million viewers. The top rated shows then pulled in the range of 20 million viewers. The top rated broadcast shows last year pulled in the range of 5-6 million viewers, and even the Game of Thrones juggernaut hasn't made it any higher than 12 million. 1.3 million is about the level the Big Bang Theory did last year, so it's pretty decent, I think.

I like Janeway...
Yeah, her writing was sometimes inconsistent. But waaaaay less then for say Archer, or even Sisko some of the times. The only thing ridiculous was that she was an Admiral before Picard. But then again I can totally see her taking a desk job after the return of Voyager - they just put the wrong rank pipes on her.

Never really got the hate and vitrol that was spewed against her (mainly on the internet though - people I have met in real life seem to have a much softer stance towards Voyager than what seems to be the concensus in the male-teenager dominated part of the webs...).

I try and resist thinking or reacting to Janeway being disrespected as a character because she's female (not saying that is the reason or that it was done here). I mean people are allowed to not react positively to any character. Occasionally it occurs to me that the type of female Janeway was is a challenge as a stereotype, even for today. People are more used to a younger, kickarse version of female empowerment. Janeway was comfortable being a leader, comfortable being a fighter, a mentor. She owned it, flaws inconsistency and all. For my part I do like her a lot. I'm proud she is female :bolian: She brought qualities to the table that were uniquely her personality and gender, just as Picard/Sisko/Archer/Kirk did. It's all good.

Yeah, there is definitely room for valid criticism of Janeway as a character. There were legit examples of where she could have been written better, and she is no Picard or Kirk.

But quite a lot of the usual criticism boils down to people "not liking" her, with her "shrill voice", and her having an "attitude". Which basically boils down to her not being a twenty-something super competent athletic fit model type that plays second fiddle to the main character (hello "Wasp" from "Ant-Man"!), and instead being a mature woman with an opinion in power. The type of character that usually is allowed to exist as a boss for the "real" main character, but not necessary as a focus herself.

I'm very glad Janeway is an essential part of Star Trek for that, and a fan of her. The franchise as a whole would be so much poorer without her. And I think her relationship with Seven is one of the best Trek pairings since Kirk and Spock.

Present company included I see.

There would be no reason for anyone to want to make that show. That ship has sailed, and it did so (for the most part) magnificently. I think you're certainly not going to see Picard and Riker or whoever out taming the universe in a starship.

This will clearly be something very different and very character focused, perhaps with a (much?) lower budget than DSC. The most obvious ideas would be:

  • Picard as an Archaeologist
  • Picard as Commandant of the Academy
  • Picard as Starfleet Commander
  • Ambassador Picard doing something interesting (trying to re-build the fragments of Romulan society after Hobus, etc)
There's no way in hell it will be TNG 2.0, nor should it be

Now, that said, I would definitely NOT rule out some cameos by the old TNG cast. I think that could be fun if done well.

I doubt it, but it's more likely than the people floating that he's going to be in charge of Starfleet Academy or something. There is no way in hell Stewart would come out of retirement for such a comparably small/unimpressive role. He doesn't need the money - he has enough to last the rest of his days. He's looking for a worthy capstone to his TV career.

Or to play a role again that he enjoys.

In the past he's been publicly dismissive of bringing back Picard, so I think there must have been something in the story pitch which captivated him. I could be wrong of course. But again, Stewart doesn't need money, so I don't think the big check would bring him into a project he didn't find compelling from a character standpoint.
