A spoof of the Star Wars franchise is in development with Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, whose credits include the Scary Movie franchise, “Epic Movie” and “Vampires Suck.”

The duo will write and direct the project, titled “Star Worlds Episode XXXIVE=MC2: The Force Awakens The Last Jedi Who Went Rogue.” Covert Media’s CEO Paul Hanson (“District 9”) is producing the film alongside Broken Road Productions’ Todd Garner (“True Memoirs of an International Assassin”).

I love Spaceballs & Galaxy Quest, but I'm very sceptical.

These movies usually have about five good bits in them and the rest seem to be the result of drunken brainstorming- simply not worth watching the run time for those five nice moments...

Well, since I consider most of the movies made by these two to be some of the worst "comedies" I've ever seen (of the ones I've seen, I didn't bother to watch more then I think 2 of the post Scary Movie movies), I'll definitely be avoiding this.

All those movies are terrible, though I did find some of the first Scary Movie funny, then again, I was 16 and had just discovered beer...

Do people still go watch those movies in theaters?

Do they not know the internet is filled with Star Wars jokes and parodies for free? :p

It's never even going to come close to 'Spaceballs' or 'Galaxy Quest', so why even bother?

It's actually quite amusing to look at that writer's filmography. It's like a map of passing fads and trends of the last 20 years and how desperately they've tried to follow them. Seriously, there's not a single original idea in that whole list!

I don't understand. Are you suggesting that because two decades-old movies in a given genre were favorites of yours, a future movie made by completely different people covering roughly similar territory may not also be great? Why on Earth would you think something like that?

They aren't trying to make classics. They just make a really generic genre picture with a bunch of passing references to current events and pop culture. They aren't even jokes for the most part, just "Hey, remember this line from that other movie?" and "look, its this minor celebrity in a wacky new context!" It isn't really even parody because there is no commentary on the material they're making jokes about.

It bugs me that there are kids starving in the world and these guys are handed millions of dollars to make these awful and completely pointless movies that no one is asking for.

Oh I'm well aware of how they operate and it must be at least moderately profitable as they keep getting their movies funded. I just miss the days when this kind of thing could be done *well*.

Hell, the 'Airplane' movies were so successful in their own right that they managed to utterly surpass the movies they were lampooning! I mean when was the last time you heard anyone talk about the 'Airport' movies or 'Zero Hour!'? I'd be willing to bet most people familiar with 'Airplane' didn't even know it was such a specific parody.

When parody is done right, it itself becomes a classic...sometimes better than or at least better known that the original. This is a reason why "Airplane" is remembered, or why people know "Weird Al" Yankovic's songs sometimes better than the songs he's parodying.

Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer are two of the least-talented people working in the business today, but because their movies cost nothing to make they can keep making them. Although they don't get large releases anymore with the diminishing returns. They don't know how to make actual movies. There is no actual parody or satire -- it's all references. Hot Shots made fun of Top Gun; Friedberg and Seltzer's joke would be to mention Top Gun.

I actually don't think Spaceballs is all that great, I loved it as a kid but when I last watched it, more often than not the jokes fell flat for me, perhaps I've just become jaded.

Well, Airplane is certainly an outlier in that regard. Lethal Weapon is still widely remembered, but how many people remember Loaded Weapon 1? How many remember the (pretty great) Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, or Mel Brooks' own Silent Movie or High Anxiety?

Sure, the Friedberg/Seltzer output may be far worse than many of the forgotten spoof movies of yore, but even then, gems like Airplane were the exception, not the rule. ;)

None of these movies from the "scary movie" people have the edge and satire of "Mel Brooks" or the Naked Gun movies

No one has the attention span these days to appreciate comedy like this

Agreed. Most spoofs are either poor, or the result of asskissing / fanboy worship (see the Family Guy Star Wars spoofs), and that's not funny. Star Wars is so played out in this sub-genre, that there's not much more to say that has not been covered in one way or another, dating back to Hardware Wars and the published satires seen in MAD and Cracked.
