‘Star Trek 3′: Roberto Orci Wants to Direct

I do like this bit from one of the commenters: "At least when ST3 crashes and burns it will actually have been an inside job."

Maybe if ST3 does crash and burn, Orci will blame the video game?

Ah, but the Devil gets all the best lines:

Devil Faraci! said:
This is madness, I say. This is Star Trek, Bob Orci cries, before he kicks me into the hole that was the footprint of WTC Building 7.

Come on, that's a little funny.

Devin was the same guy who concocted the whole "Star Trek was voted the worst film by 100 trekkies at a convention" bullshit. He would have said anything negative about the new film, Orci directing or not.

Yeah, I don't find it funny because I find the man's intent, when it comes to reporting entertainment events, to be malicious and deceptive. So I don't care for anything he has to say on the subject.

:rommie: I love that that particular story has become some bizarre conspiracy theory (FWICS) about him "concocting" something.

Apparently he even got to Jordan Hoffman who actually ran the panel. Devil Faraci! truly works in mysterious ways...

I would love for him to prove the naysayers wrong.

In fact, I lay down a challenge...Bob, I dare you to make a great film! I double dare you.

Fans have been yapping for years about how Trek needs a real fan who loves the franchise to be in charge.

Well, you just got what you asked for.

What, he's the wrong kind of fan? Yeah, look around the boards again and see how many people post here that you massively disagree with about what Trek is and how it should be handled and what constitutes "real Star Trek." Then ask yourself what the odds have ever been that if a real Trekkie ever took the reins he/she would be someone whose understanding of Trek you approved of.

You can fairly call Orci a hundred bad things (including a whacked-out conspiracy theorist, which again given what can be read here on TrekBBS seems to be an overlapping set with fans) but don't dare try to pretend for a moment that he's less into "Star Trek" and less knowledgeable about it than any of you. :techman:

John Logan was a big Trek fan as well.

Bad news for you, kid - being the writer on a feature is in no way being in charge of anything about the production. Didn't you know that? Or maybe you don't understand the phrase "in charge."

Old Hollywood joke: "The starlet was so dumb, she slept with the writers."

You get hired to do a job. Your job is done when the script is turned in. If they want to, they keep you around to do rewrites - or they may just pay someone else to do that. The people in charge can, and will, discard anything you've written without contacting you because after you're paid you're not part of the production. You have no authority. None. Or did you never wonder why writers want to become directors and producers? Well, now you've learned something new.

Nicholas Meyer was the best thing that happened to Trek (post TOS), and he was hardly a "real fan." Either that or it's Patrick Stewart, but he wasn't fan either.

Meyer and Bennett came into Star Trek cold, immersed themselves in the characters, and became good and faithful custodians of them. Orci is at least that good.

I think he cares about the Trek characters, has his finger on their pulses, and so far, he has taken them in exciting directions. IMO, taking proper care of the characters is 90 percent of making a good Trek story.

Agreed.

The studio has certain expectations for what kind of film they can market and what they're willing to spend a lot of money on. Those expectations have a decisive impact on the script.

Yea, it's pretty funny that some people are actually suggesting Paramount would spend a $200M Budget on the 3rd film, and then just toss any old guy into the Director's chair, because they don't care about Trek or the 50th Anniversary. If they cared that little, they wouldn't sabotage it, to give them an excuse to reboot, they would simply reboot it now.

I'm not sure where to drop this nugget, so I'll drop it here:

I don't remember any outcry during the episode "The Augments", where the final Klingon bridge scene plays out in a very similar fashion to the final Reliant scene from The Wrath of Khan. Including Malik being burned on the face and one arm not quite working right.

The more I see of the Abrams films, the more convinced that they do get "Star Trek".
