‘Star Trek 3′: Roberto Orci Wants to Direct

Wait... The crew of the Enterprise D became boring, bloodless and moralistic automatons? Maybe, if you only watched the first two seasons of the Next Generation and absolutely nothing afterwards. The TNG era not only got better with Season 3 and onwards, but also told some pretty amazing stories that hold up even more so than the original series. I don't know why you think they devolved into what you say they did later on, because the early seasons of TNG was downright full of it.
^^^^
HAHAHAHAHAHA!...oh, wait, you're serious?

Sorry, but TNG was bland (with perhaps the exception of BoBW, Yesterday's Enterprise, and any episodes where the Klingons were the main characters. Hell, Picard was pontificating about how perfect Earth and the Federation were so often, he came across more as a sermonizing church priest, rather than a Star Fleet ship's captain.

William Riker was SUPPOSED to be molded after James T. Kirk, but the TNG writers did such a poor job with the character over the years, he went from 'wanting a starship command before age 30' to passing up 3 promotions to Captain (including one prior to becoming First Officer of the 1701-D -- he could have commanded the U.S.S. Drake); and basically becoming 'Younger Picard'.

And I especially liked 'Chain of Command' where, when they got a military style captain (Edward Jellico); the crew (Riker included) started whining about all the work he was having them do; and even Geordi begged Riker to see if Captain Picard might talk to Jellico about poor Geordi having to pull double shits.

None of these bozos would have lasted two weeks on Kirk's Enterprise.

I think you'll find that it is not in fact hugely controversial to say that TNG's third season onward was probably the franchise's strongest televised outing. (Though this hardly makes it perfect, and I do think TOS deserves more respect than it gets.)

I knew Jellico was obsessive, but that's taking it to extremes!

Earth never* appears directly in and is never directly threatened in TUC. Gorkon's ship is supposed to be escorted there but this never actually happens. Which actually was kind of refreshing, though the rest of that movie was unfortunately a mess.

(* EDIT: Correction, there are a couple of meeting scenes set there. So that would be one of the examples of Earth appearing very little.)

In TUC, Earth was threatened in the sense that if the conspirators had succeeded, there would've been war with the Klingons, and Earth would've faced attack. Same threat as in STID.

I guess my point was five of the six TOS movies started with the crew on walking around on Earth. TVH started with the crew walking around on Vulcan, but they were heading to Earth, and the story was set in Earth's past, but on Earth nonetheless (maybe a strange new world to them, but not us).

Orci would be just following convention if the story for ST3 starts on Earth, features it briefly, or puts it in danger.

Personally, I hope we don't see Earth in the next film. I'd rather see a remake of "Spock's Brain". But it in no way represents a deal-breaker for me. I'll still be there opening night, first show.

Which of course is not even remotely similar to "threat to Earth" stories like ST09 and TMP and TVH and so on.

And STID would have been kind of a similar plot to that, true, except for the last act featuring battles in Earth orbit and a bad guy plowing a spaceship into San Francisco.

Yes, but it's hardly outre to say that maybe the convention is a bit tired, yes? That the movies have been doing it forever at some level is not a great reason to say that it would be super-fabulous for them to keep doing so. That's the kind of question we can evaluate on its own merits instead of always talking about the Precedents in the Sacred Texts (or Film Reels).

The "Earth in danger" trope was played out well before Abrams and Company showed up on the scene. I would have likely went in a different direction but I doubt Paramount is going to give me $200 million to make my Eugenics Wars saga which, incidentally, is set on Earth.

I think it's tough to get general audiences to care about the dangers to Whogivesafuck III.

I honestly don't think we will see Earth. STID ends with the beginning of the five-year mission into deep space. I'd bet credits to navy beans Orci and the others pick them up during that mission, and therefore far far away from Earth.

I don't know. I remember Trek09 leaving us with the same promise showing our being together and manning their appropriate stations while they head out into deep space with the mission statement to seek out new life forms and new civilizations. The result of finding new life? A pre-title action sequence that was less about actual discovery of a new alien life form and more about adding "Kirk and Spock in conflict". And immediately after the title is shown, we're back on Earth.

Does the promise of a five-year mission really hold that much weight when these movies go out of their way to maximize the bottom line?

I am confident that based on the two previous films (which were critical and financial successes) this third entry will be just as good.

If you already know that it's bad however, I have one questions:

When you invented time travel and used it to go to the future to watch the movie before coming back to tell us how bad it was, when you actually watched the film did you pay for your ticket with your own money or did you just bootleg it?

More importantly, since we've established you have access to reliable time travel, could you swing by my office in Burbank and pick me up? I gave myself a splinter this morning and would love to go back in time a couple hours and prevent that from happening. Thanks!

Every time traveler knows that America crumbles in late-2015 and that the new currency is the quatloo in 2016. I imagine that those that have already seen it had to give handies in the back alleys before having enough quatloo's to buy tickets.

I've already bet 300 Quatloo's on the new comer - Orci that is! :techman:

Well, fortunately Paramount does.

I did not say that I have any confidence in Paramount with regards to Star Trek either.:p

Let's for a moment forget that this guy doesn't know to write a decent story. Even then, he's never directed a movie before. At least Abrams, for all his faults, was a good director.

Fortunately, that doesn't matter. Paramount will spend the money, make a profit, fund the next one by these guys or by other producers/writers/directors who they think will do a similarly successful job for them. So those of us who love Star Trek and like these movies win.

Who knows, Orci may turn out to be a brilliant director. There's no predicting that.

For everyone that takes Star Trek/Star Wars way too seriously, I recommend the South Park episode, "The China Problem".

Exactly. We won't know until he tries. It's the old Catch-22. People don't like that he's never directed a film, but won't give him the chance so that he can show his ability to direct. I mean, it's obvious he loves Star Trek, so this is his chance to put his best foot forward, and do something that will be a labor of love.

By the way, I appreciate that you're willing to give him that chance.
