‘CSI’ Planted Spinoff About Cyber Crime Gets CBS Pilot Order

Did you just tie corporate cronyism and graft in politics to a CSI thread?
Parenthetically, yes. A wee bit of honest intellectual provocation rarely hurts anyone.

Broadcast airwaves are part of the public commons, leased to profit-seeking megacorporations, and it's in this public space that these semi-authoritarian fantasies of stylish and heroic coppers battling a comically exaggerated chunk of the citizenry are foisted on us. If CBS TV wants to loop that sort of thing 24/7 on a cable channel, that's one thing, and I'm not saying there shouldn't be any cop shows on the broadcast networks whatsoever, but that doesn't mean I have to like the stuff there is.

What Who song will they use? "Cache Cache," "Going Mobile," "I Can't Explain"?

Squeezebox!

The thing about the cop shows is that it's easier to ignore the authoritarian message when the bad guy is a rapist or a murderer. All but the most extreme of anarchists will agree that murderers and rapists should be taken off the streets. It's just when they get into areas like recreational drug use and intellectual property rights when the authoritarianism becomes more apparent.

Of course, there are some cases where the shows kind of condition you to always think the accused is guilty and they are only ever found innocent over legal technicalities and maneuvering. But they also condition you to think that as a jury member, 'reasonable doubt' means 'beyond a shadow of a doubt' so these shows have actually made it harder to convict people.
