‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franchise

Dream

EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures has made a deal for The Legend Of Conan, an action film that will star Arnold Schwarzenegger in one of his signature roles as Robert E. Howard’s mythic barbarian. The deal brings Conan and Schwarzenegger back to Universal, which released the first film that launched Schwarzenegger’s movie career back in 1982. Universal has world rights on the film.

Wow, really? I think it might be a little late for a sequel.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

They're not rebooting anything. They're simply ignoring the Momoa film and "Conan the Destroyer". It sounds to me like they're taking another crack at John Milius's "King Conan" script, or at the very least their own version of that story.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

The Momoa movie might not have been the greatest, but I though Momoa himself did alright in the role.

Ah, whatever, Arnold's obviously the bigger box office draw. I am kind of interested in seeing how this all turns out.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

Great. But Arnold has a lot of projects in development. I wouldn't mind seeing this happen, but who knows if it will.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

Should be interesting to see if Arnie will use this as the impetus to try and really bulk up again.

Momoa was solid as Conan (and truer to the character than Arnold was), but yeah, that was just a terrible movie.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

It was not bad. If they do an another i still prefer Momoa. Maybe Schwarzy could be a mentor or something.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

Arnie would be about the right age for Conan of the Isles, I suppose.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

Hopefully JEJ will be reprising his role as Thulsa Doom's head.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

Forget what isaid, i hate Arnold's accent.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

:D Very happy with this news.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

I was hoping for a King Conan film since the moment I saw that shot of him on the throne at the end of the film.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

^ Joe: I've always wanted to see a movie version of 'Red Nails', I personally think it's the very best story, part horror, part sword and sorcery, part psychological drama. Gloomy, dangerous setting, weird monsters, deranged people trapped in a dying city, it would be brilliant. With either Ahnult or Momoa.

I was thinking the same thing.

Same here. I think it's great news that they're doing another Conan film with Arnie.

Now if we can just get the Tue Lies team back for a sequel...

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

This is fantastic news. Hopefully we're a few films away from Conan's last adventure.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

Ugh. I'd rather they get Momoa back and take another shot at doing a movie that's true to the source material at long last, but this time with a bigger budget so the effects aren't cringeworthy and distracting, not to mention a halfway decent script.

But realistically, they're doing this for Ahnuld's name recognition. I'm sure there will be plenty of curiosity to see gramps running around in a loincloth.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

I can't help but think that the time for Arnie to do this has come and gone. It'll be interesting to see how, if at all, he gets back into shape for it. I do like the idea of an older, grizzled Conan, like we saw at the end of CTB but really, I think the time to have done this was 10 years ago or so, when Milius was shopping around his King Conan: Crown of Iron script (or whatever it was called).

Also, as Admiral Young points out, this isn't a reboot. I'm not sure what you'd call it where they return to the original continuity (assuming that this is a sequel to CTB, albeit one which ignores The Destroyer). A revert?

The nearest similar examples I can think of are Superman Returns and Never Say Never Again. Neither is on all fours, as SR was (infamously) a 'loose sequel' to the first movie but with a different cast, while NSNA was a remake of one of Connery's earlier 007 movies.

While Conan has a certain cult following, it's not as popular as The Terminator or other signature Arnie roles and I'm not sure how big an audience there will be for this.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

^^^I'm so tired of seeing this, really...

REH described Conan as "Black haired and sullen-eyed, full great melancholies and great mirths," which is how Arnie actually played him in the first movie. Momoa was brown-haired and pissed-off eyed and the only thing "great" about his personification was the level of boredom he inspired in me when I watched him.

I welcome the Governator's return, however it manifests.

Re: ‘Conan The Barbarian' and Arnold Reunited: Universal Reboots Franc

I'm curious.

Get this and Ghostbusters 3 the same year? The return of two more 80's franchises for one last attempt at glory!!!
