Of all of the things to fault different eras of trek in comparison to others I think the production design and effects related to the ships shouldn't even register unless they did something so off the wall crazy that it completely takes you out of the moment. There are times like that but, unlike in the movies, most of the time it isn't really black-and-white - I think those are few and far between, frankly.

That's the beauty of this kind of storytelling and one aspect that I've missed from trek until now. It leaves it up to each person to reflect from their own perspective, project their experience onto it and maybe even think about how to change for the better.
