    Common author name abbreviations

A recent case in which my reference to Diane Carey as "DC" being misread as a reference to a well-known comic book publisher suggests that maybe we need a reference thread for author abbreviations. ADF: Alan Dean Foster. Creator of the "Humanx Commonwealth," "Spellsinger," and "Mad Amos"...

Quick question about July picture on 2024 LD calendar

That's the one with T'Ana very aggressively treating a patient whose foot is being eaten, while Tendi looks on. Anybody remember which episode that is?

    Snarky fun with commercials

Has anybody seen the current campaign for the Morongo Indian Casino? (example on Vimeo) The place certainly seems popular with shapeshifters! Then there's the current "Helpful Honda Holiday" spots, That Beluga sure can, ahem, wail! Then there's the direct-to-patient campaign for Jardiance...

Gary Lockwood seems to have made a habit of playing doomed characters

Saw 2001 last night at Hollywood Bowl. My second time, if I remember right, seeing it with the score performed live. (And I've seen it enough times to get it. And as I was leaving, I reassured a few people that it's perfectly normal not to understand it the first time. Or the second. Or the...

How the Children of Tama Lost Their Verbs

Dathon and Picard at El-Adrel The Tamarian Language has been a mystery to most of the Federation since before Picard and the late Dathon made their communication breakthrough. The story of the language's unique structure is a story of freedom from bondage. The People of Memory The People who...

The most offensive commercial ever. And it's BAAAACCKK!

I honestly thought Humanity was rid of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors' Bureau's "Broccoli" commercial (you've seen it, it's the one with the dad feeding his son a line of bovine scat about how all the food in Vegas is broccoli-based, in order to make him not want to go to Vegas with his...

LeVar Burton on Mister Rogers Neighborhood (from 1998) on the web this week

Back in 1998, LeVar Burton made an appearance on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood (episode 1724, the conclusion of the "Giving and Receiving" week). Rogers shows some pictures of him (including pictures from Roots, ST:TNG, and Reading Rainbow), at the beginning of the episode, and then, after the...

    Weird ST dream

A weird Star Trek dream I had last night (I feel safe in posing it, as it's too ludicrous to ever become even a fanfic in a 'zine): It was in the form of a Star Trek episode (not one that ever aired, nor anything published as licensed tie-in prose). In the dream, I was watching the episode, my...

Question for astronomy geeks: named stars in nebulae?

Question for any astronomy geeks here: can anybody think of a named star, i.e., one that has more than just a catalog designation, that is (at least as seen from Earth) in the middle of a nebula? It doesn't have to be immersed in the nebula (although that would be even better).

Anybody ever hear of this book?

The Challenge, (TOS) by David Miraglia? https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-challenge-david-miraglia/1140962370?ean=9781957220635 It's also listed on Amazon. With mixed reviews. Seems to be published by an outfit I've never heard of, "Rushmore Press." How did they ever even get a license...

I just noticed something: LD is the only current ST series with NO CALENDAR!

How come there's no Lower Decks wall calendar? I'd certainly buy one. At least as long as it DIDN'T have the infamous Boimler nude scene from "Cupid's Errant Arrow."

Anybody see, hear, or read anything about Vulcans and chocolate?

This page on TVTropes has a line (near the end of the "Live-Action TV" section) claiming that The Vulcans of Star Trek become intoxicated on chocolate. Anybody here ever heard of that, canon or otherwise?

    RIP Mike Collins

I just happened to notice on the Wikipedia home page that Mike Collins, the CMP of Apollo 11, died today. He was 90.

    "Sad? No"

Finishing the C.S. Lewis novel, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, I came upon (as I related in the "What are you reading" thread) this passage, which I am absolutely certain I later saw quoted (verbatim or very nearly so) in a Star Trek novel: I am of course not accusing anybody of plagiarism...

So when's the DVD set coming out?

Nothing on B&N. Nothing on Amazon. A Google search uncovers DVDs already for sale that are probably either pirated or outright fraudulent. Anybody here know anything?

    Omega Glory backstory?

I vaguely remember a novel or e-novella that brought up the subject. Anybody remeber what?

    E-book-only titles?

Is there a list of e-book-only Star Trek titles anywhere handy?

    Hitchhiker references? SW? Humanx?

We all know that Data's positronic brain was a wide open allusion to Asimov (acknowledged, even lampshaded), but are there any known cases in which Star Trek scripts or prose have given any kind of nod to Douglas Adams? Or ADF's Humanx Commonwealth? Or to Star Wars?
